About us

The London Borough of Camden is a leader in sustainable transport. We consistently push the boundaries of what is possible to create a cleaner and safer borough, as well as city centre - whether it is pedestrianisation of Camden High Street, award‑winning central London schemes such as the West End Project, Healthy School Streets, or our progressive parking policies. At Camden, we're not just designing streets – we're reshaping the way people live, move and connect. We're building a borough where walking, cycling, and sustainable travel are the norm, not the exception. This is your chance to be part of an ambitious and forward‑thinking team making radical social change a reality.

The role

As a Senior Transport Planner, you will help deliver the ambitious goals of the Camden Transport Strategy by delivering neighbourhood‑based Healthy Streets projects, from localised safety schemes and Healthy School Streets (HSS) to low‑traffic neighbourhood initiatives. The Safe & Healthy Streets team is at the forefront of Healthy Streets based project delivery and in the recent Healthy Streets Scorecard Camden was the third placed borough overall. In this role you will be responsible for project‑managing the development and implementation of multiple small to medium size “Healthy Streets” projects within neighbourhoods across Camden. You will also support Principal officers with high‑quality programme and project management support on projects such as the pedestrianisation of Camden High Street. These projects focus on localised road safety, bus priority, walking, cycling, traffic reduction, and public realm improvement.

Current schemes include:

  • Fitzrovia Phase 1 – Status: in construction
  • St George The Martyr (HSS) – Status: decision made
  • King Henrys Road Area – Status: nearing construction
  • Holmes Road – Status: made permanent

The Senior Transport Planner will be responsible for all aspects of project delivery, ensuring that schemes are delivered on time and to budget. This includes project planning, feasibility and optioneering, community engagement & consultation, report writing, stakeholder management, monitoring, funding, budgeting and financial controls. Working across departments, from planning, regeneration, sustainability, highways and parking, you will help ensure that neighbourhood‑based projects support and contribute to wider urban planning and sustainability initiatives, such as the regeneration of our estates and the fulfillment of the goals in Camden's Climate Action Plan. You will also play a key role in shaping how these projects connect to Camden's wider goals – from tackling the climate emergency to creating vibrant public spaces. Collaborating with internal teams, Transport for London, the GLA and local communities will be at the heart of your work.

About you

We are looking for a Senior Transport Planner who can bring their experience to support Camden Council's transport planning function. We are seeking a project manager or someone who has had experience supporting or leading on large transport projects or programmes, including project governance and information management. Strong interpersonal skills are essential, enabling you to build effective relationships with colleagues at all levels. You will also demonstrate the ability to provide senior leaders with confidence that projects are on track to meet time, cost, and quality criteria.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • Knowledge of the policy and statutory framework – locally, regionally and nationally – within which the Euston Masterplan, Healthy Streets, transport planning and related activities operate.
  • Skill and experience in project management – capable of delivering Healthy Streets transport infrastructure projects on time and to budget.
  • Experience and understanding of healthy streets and strategic transport planning projects, including experience providing input onto planning applications, and experience working in a team on projects of significant size, value and complexity.
  • Appreciation of key streetscape design issues and challenges, including accessibility and sustainability.
  • Good partnership working skills, and the ability to develop effective stakeholder relations on transport matters, including liaising and negotiating with relevant external organisations.
  • Capacity to communicate clearly and sensitively as part of community engagement activities and with elected members, and understanding of inclusive community engagement.
  • Ability to help support and oversee the workload of more junior team members and/or consultants, and understanding of how industry consultants operate.
  • Strong analytical and report‑writing skills.
  • Good presenting skills.
  • Demonstrates initiative and a pro‑active, forward‑thinking approach to carrying out work.
  • Good political awareness and sensitivity.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Understanding of corporate policies and strategies.
  • Educated to degree level (or equivalent) in Transport Planning or Project Management.
