The Oncology department at North West Anglia Foundation Trust is looking for a highly motivated and dynamic consultant to join our team in providing high quality patient care, in Urology and Breast tumour sites. Other tumour sites would be considered as the second site, along with either Urology or Breast.

The Oncology department at Peterborough City Hospital, and the Woodlands Centre at Hinchingbrooke hospital offer a comprehensive service in collaboration with other oncologists, nursing teams, administrative staff and the Radiotherapy department in delivering high quality care and treatment in both the outpatient and inpatient setting. Main duties of the job

  • To work with NWAFT colleagues to strengthen existing Urological and breast cancer services, supporting multidisciplinary meetings and providing high quality care for cancer patients.
  • Active participation in clinical audit, continuing professional development and research as appropriate. There is access to a study leave budget for appropriate CPD activities.
  • The post holder will be expected to contribute to the Trust and CBU Clinical Governance processes including the dedicated monthly half days.
  • Out-of-hours participation in consultant on-call rota comprising telephone advice for Peterborough City Hospital on a 1:10 basis. It is expected that the on-call consultant will do a remote ward round review daily at the weekends and bank holidays.
  • Responsibilities for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and for contributing to undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing professional development activity, locally and nationally.
  • To develop and participate in collaborative initiatives, studies and trials.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • See and treat Urology and Breast cancer patients, joining a supportive team.
  • To collaborate with colleagues at the Regional Cancer Centre (Cambridge University Hospitals Foundation Trusts (CUH), Cancer Units and other agencies to ensure optimum quality of care for cancer patients including referring patients for brachytherapy or to the phase I trials unit at CUH.

Person specification

  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT in Clinical Oncology.
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems in Oncology.
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.
  • Experience in delivery of SACT and radiotherapy for breast and urological cancers.
  • Experience in participating in and conduction of clinical trials.
  • FRCR; Entry on GMC Specialist Register; eligible for entry on Register or within six months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of training (CCT) at time of interview.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of GMC standards in Good Medical Practice.

Leadership/Management Skills

  • Ability to take responsibility and demonstrate leadership when appropriate.
  • An understanding of and ability to demonstrate your ability to empower others, lead through change, influence strategically, and demonstrate innovation and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to cope with and effectively organise the workload of a Consultant.
  • Good knowledge of the structures and culture of the NHS, as well as the roles, responsibilities and relationships across the MDT and the multi-professional team.

Teaching and Training

  • Clinical governance: demonstrates awareness of principles of good decision making. Awareness of own limitations. Track record of engaging in clinical governance including reporting errors and learning from errors.
  • Audit: experience of audit.
  • Teaching: experience of supervising undergraduates, junior doctors and other staff; ability to teach clinical skills.
  • Research: ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems; ability to critically appraise published evidence.

Where your role requires a DBS check, the Trust will pay the fee upfront and reclaim the cost (including a £5 admin fee) from your first month’s salary. Volunteers are exempt.
