Job Overview
The successful candidate will provide consultant oversight and psychiatric treatment for beds for patients with primarily functional illness on the Maples.
It is anticipated that the job plan will include the opportunity to develop special interests such as teaching or research.
Maples is a bedded ward, staffed as a single unit.
Patients with functional and organic illness are managed in two fully separate areas: beds for dementia and beds for functional disorders.
Both wards now provide care for functional patients, while organic patients are admitted to Denbeigh ward, Cambridge.
The ward is supported by a full multi‑disciplinary team including occupational therapy, physiotherapy, psychology, speech and language therapy (SALT), and a full‑time SAS doctor, occasionally a Specialist Training (ST) doctor and two junior doctors.
The post holder will be expected to act as a clinical supervisor for the specialty trainee, and development as an educational supervisor is encouraged.
A robust and effective discharge planning team is in place.
One of the CPFT community geriatricians visits the ward one morning per week, and all community physical health teams are available to support the ward.
The successful post holder will work closely with the CRHTT OP based at the Cavell, providing cross‑cover when needed.
The CRHTT OP comprises a team leader, a consultant psychiatrist, a dementia nurse specialist, CPNs and support workers.
The team covers the northern part of the Trust area, including Peterborough, Huntingdon and Fenland.
Responsibilities
- Provide consultant oversight and psychiatric care for older adults on the Maples unit in Peterborough.
- Deliver flexible clinical input, taking account of professional interests and allowing time for teaching, research or other projects.
- Supervise specialty trainees and support their development as educational supervisors.
- Work closely with the CRHTT OP, community teams and liaison services for older people to ensure a seamless pathway.
