The Economy and Climate Change team oversees the Climate Change and Environment programme, which aims to reduce carbon emissions, protect the environment, and support Cambridgeshire County Council’s mission to become a net zero organisation by 2030. We’re looking for a passionate and technically skilled Climate Consents Officer to help us get there.
In this pivotal role, you’ll provide expert advice on carbon emissions and climate risk across major planning applications and infrastructure projects. You’ll work closely with internal teams and external partners to ensure climate considerations are embedded in policy development and project delivery.

Our office base is Sackville House, Cambourne, with flexibility to work at alternative Council office locations, as well as homeworking. The post is fixed term for 2 years with the possibility of being extended or made permanent.
What will you be doing?
- As a Climate Consents Officer you will lead technical reviews of planning applications, including NSIPs and TWAOs, ensuring carbon and climate impacts are fully assessed.
- You will provide strategic carbon advice across the Council, influencing projects, policies, and strategies.
- Managing and delivering climate-related projects aligned with our Climate Change and Environment Strategy will be a key part of the role, along with contributing to the Council’s Climate Training Programme, including Carbon Literacy Training.
- You will be required to support with funding bids and help shape innovative, evidence-based climate initiatives.
About you
To be successful in this role we are looking for someone with the following skills and abilities:
- A degree level qualification in a subject relating to Environment, Sustainable Development, or a related field (postgraduate qualifications desirable).
- Strong knowledge of carbon accounting, climate legislation, and environmental impact assessments.
- Excellent communication and analytical skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate across teams.
- A proactive, solutions-focused mindset with experience in project management and stakeholder engagement.
