Plaster Technician in Cambridge

An exciting opportunity to join a small and dedicated team of Orthopaedic Practitioners in Addenbrookes Plaster room, working across fracture and specialist clinics such as Ponsetti, diabetic foot and paediatric physiotherapy. This diverse role also supports paediatric theatres, inpatients, and the emergency department. Our main service is to apply and remove casts in different materials and their removal, as well as the measuring and fitting of braces which is becoming a larger element of the role as the service evolves in line with health care practices.

Main duties of the job:

• Apply and remove both simple and complex casts in a range of different materials.
• Cover a range of specialist clinics, including paediatric Ponsetti casting, diabetic total contact casting, and the application of removable casts.
• Communicate effectively with other health care professionals and members of the wider disciplinary team.
• Correct documentation of patients' treatments.
• Provide teaching to patients and caregivers on plaster/brace care both verbally and through written care instructions.
• Recognise concerns from patient interactions, provide correct information as they arise, and escalate as needed.
• Work as part of a team and autonomously.
• Act as a role model.
• Attend theatres to apply complex casts, and work in the emergency department and wards as needed to apply casts and braces.

Person specification:

Qualifications: To meet the standards of continued professional development (CPD) as required by the BOA, to remain on the live register of practitioners.

Experience:

• Experience as a qualified Plaster Practitioner (6 months minimum), working in an Orthopaedic environment.
• Previous health care experience either in the primary or hospital setting.

Knowledge:

• Understanding of anatomy and physiology, relating to fracture, bone healing, and musculoskeletal congenital conditions.
• Up to date with current casting techniques and materials.
• Experience of working as a band 5, to include wound assessment and wound care competencies.
• Knowledge of pressure area care (to include risk assessment and escalating/acting on findings).
• Experience of working within an MDT.
• Ability to work and communicate with differing levels of staff across the trust.
• Understanding the importance of confidentiality and data protection.
• Understanding of accountability.

Skills:

• Basic IT skills.
• Good verbal and written communication skills.
• Capable of working as an integral member of a small team.
• Effective interpersonal skills.
• Commitment to multi-disciplinary working.
• Act as a mentor for more junior staff, prepare and present teaching for other specialities across the trust.
• Communicate effectively with patients and relatives and other health care professionals, be able to identify and escalate as appropriate areas of concern, to the correct responsible health care professional.
