Job overview: The role of the Hospital Engineer is to support the Senior Engineers, in close co-operation with other building engineering and maintenance staff, with the responsibility for successful ongoing operation and maintenance of Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust premises, assets and liaising with the Trust Projects teams, ensuring statutory compliance and a suitable environment for patient care is available at all times. Success in completing these primary objectives will be judged against specified performance criteria of quality, timeliness, cost/resource and health & safety management agreed with the post-holder as part of the annual performance appraisal/review process.

Main duties of the job: You will form part of a multi-disciplinary team whose role is to provide the best possible service to the Trust. The Hospital Engineer will have both group and individual responsibilities for defined aspects of the service but each will ensure their contribution is in accordance with the Estates and Facilities vision and the Trust’s overall objectives.

Person specification:

  • Qualifications: Educated to or working towards degree level in mechanical engineering, OR equivalent level of knowledge and experience. Evidence of specific job related continuous professional development. Record of continuous development over a broad range of subjects such as legislation updates, technical development and innovation, management policies, sustainability agenda etc. Technical qualifications related to role within healthcare or equivalent. AP/RP duties in one or more of Steam, Med gas, Vent, Water.
  • Experience: Engineering experience in an operational NHS and/or healthcare estates maintenance environment with portfolio to demonstrate proven track record and wide range of expertise, including the efficient management of maintenance staff and activities. Experience of contract and subcontract management with a number of external organisations. Project management & process experience for capital projects and minor works, e.g. Lifecycle / Backlog replacement; refurbishment programmes and infrastructure development works. Evidence of negotiation and conflict resolution within an operational estates and facilities environment. Experience of successfully managing directly employed staff of varying trades and disciplines.
  • Knowledge: Specialist knowledge of engineering and infrastructure processes and the impact that they have on the healthcare provision. Particularly considering operation, maintenance and resilience of healthcare premises. In depth knowledge of applicable guidance for example HTM, HBN, HTN and other applicable guidance or best practice. Knowledge of the hospital systems for example: HVAC; Specialist Ventilation; steam and LTHW systems, medical gasses etc. Demonstrate an understanding of acute hospitals and the skills/competency to operate and maintain the assets appropriately. Knowledge of resilient systems within healthcare premises and emergency planning for the estate. Understanding of NHS project management tools, systems and procedures. Understanding of clinical relationships adjacencies within healthcare facilities and stakeholder consultation.
  • Skills: Ability to read schematics. Good written and oral communication skills. Highly developed organisational and planning ability. Ability to assess complex situations and prioritise in the face of conflicting needs of the service. Good IT skills including Microsoft Office. Ability to react safely and quickly in emergency situations with regard to estate infrastructure failure. CAD, PPM database and project management tools.
  • Additional Requirements: The ability to understand and behave at all times, towards patients, visitors and colleagues according to the Trust values of safe, kind, excellent. Demonstrate an ability to be practical, efficient, calm, tolerant and reassuring.
