An exceptional opportunity has arisen for a Critical Care Education band 6 to deliver excellence across two critical care units. This is a pivotal role for an experienced critical care nurse who thrives in complex clinical environments and is passionate about developing the next generation of critical care nurses.

Working across a diverse portfolio of specialist services including Transplant, Oncology, Vascular, Neuro, Neurosurgical and Major Trauma, you will contribute to the educational opportunities and development for critical care nurses. You will support a large number of the CC workforce driving high-quality pre- and post-registration education, workforce development and career progression, alongside policy development and changes to practice.

You will be instrumental in ensuring education delivery aligns with the National Framework for Critical Care Education Standards, embedding evidence-based practice, innovation and continuous improvement. Main duties of the job:

  • To work across all Critical Care areas as a practice development nurse facilitating CC3N step 1 to 3 competency completion for all nursing staff, through formal and informal teaching, and standardization of competency assessment.
  • To support the review of the current Critical Care Step 1 education curriculum, and deliver a new version ensuring it is focused, current, achievable and incorporates the learning outcomes of both local and the CC3N Step 1 competencies.
  • To facilitate and support the delivery of the Critical Care education programme.
  • To support the implementation of the Digital Step 1, 2 and 3 project, increasing compliance and timely completion by critical care staff and new starters.
  • To support and promote the work-based learning and competency completion of nursing staff, by promoting Practice Supervisor and Practice Assessor training, ensuring uptake of these roles is increased, and delivering on their feedback of support required.
  • Work to review, identify and feedback on strategies to improve student’s engagement, learning, assessment and completion of the CC3N Step 1 to 3 competencies.
  • To work in the clinical environment across critical care.
  • Act as a link with staff from other areas to share knowledge, best practice and clinical expertise.
  • Act as a link with staff from the regional Critical Care Course.
  • To teach on the regional critical care course, in house foundation program and trust wide educational collaborations.

Person specification:

  • Qualifications: RGN – degree or diploma, Critical Care Course at 60 credits, Degree, Post Graduate Certificate in Education (or equivalent) completed or in progress, MSc
  • Experience: At least 2 years Critical care experience with post graduate CC course, Experience teaching, training and mentoring staff within critical care, Quality improvement Project management experience, Experience of leading or developing a project, Audit / research experience
  • Knowledge: Expert clinical knowledge in Critical Care, Ability to integrate education and professional needs with the needs of the service, Understanding of current issues in Critical Care nursing and delivery of service
  • Skills: Good interpersonal and communication skills, Excellent team working skills, Motivational leader, Excellent organisational skills, Ability to integrate educational/professional needs of the service, Able to adapt to the changing needs of the Critical Care unit, Able to prioritise workload

  • The ability to understand and behave at all times, towards patients, visitors and colleagues according to the Trust values of Safe, Kind, Excellent.
