Reporting to the Manager of Municipal By-law Compliance & Corporate Security, this supervisory position is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations within the Corporate Security team and ensuring the supporting processes operate effectively and efficiently. This position supervises a team of Security Guards whose roles are to ensure the protection of City assets, and safety of staff, visitors, and contractors as well as compliance with City Policies and municipal by-laws.
The supervisor is responsible for training, coaching, mentoring and developing staff to ensure services delivered meet both legislated and customer service objectives.
What you will be doing:
- Supervise day-to-day operations of Security Guards ensuring operational policies and procedures are followed.
Education:
- Post-secondary degree/diploma minimum 2-year college diploma in Police Foundations, Law and Security, criminology, judicial proceedings, regulatory/public administration, or related disciplines. Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Licensed as a Security Guard/Private Investigator under the Ontario Private Security Investigative Services Act.
Experience and Knowledge:
- Minimum 3-5 years progressive experience in Municipal Law Enforcement/Security field.
- Minimum two (2) years of experience leading staff in a supervisory or team leadership role, preferably in a unionized environment.
- Must possess a solid background in enforcement techniques, courtroom decorum, performance management, dispute resolution, customer service, report writing and presentation skills.
- Working knowledge of Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, the Private Security and Investigative Services Act, Trespass to Property Act, Ontario use of force model, the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, Occupational Health & Safety Act, Municipal By-laws, and relevant enabling legislation such as Municipal Act, Provincial Offences Act, Building Code Act, and Planning Act.
- Working knowledge of Vulnerability Assessments and/or CPTED are considered an asset.
- Must be able to accurately and objectively interpret, apply, and enforce a wide variety of by-laws, provincial/federal legislation, policies, and procedures, and relay compliance-related information to others in a variety of situations.
- Understanding of Municipal sector and municipal government operations/structure.
- Experience leading and supporting continuous improvement initiatives.
- Effective oral communication and strong interpersonal skills; the ability to deal authoritatively, but politely with the public.
- Strong conflict resolution, negotiation and communication skills with the ability to diffuse emotionally charged situations.
- The ability to apply tact, diplomacy and persuasion with confident messaging when dealing with various stakeholders.
- Ability to performance manage and apply progressive discipline process for employees as required.
- Strong organizational and planning skills with a high attention to detail.
- Demonstrated time management skills with the ability to prioritize workloads and meet deadlines with minimal supervision.
- Demonstrated ability to exercise discretion and tact and maintain a high degree of confidentiality at all times.
- Computer literacy and proficiency in various software including Microsoft Office, AMANDA and GIS.
- Experience in writing reports and delivering presentations is required.
- Trainer certification in use of force/de-escalation would be considered an asset.
