The Sainsbury Laboratory is a research institute focusing on plant developmental biology and computational modelling of plant development. Our £4 million plant growth facility comprises 6 glasshouse areas and 42 growth chambers. The role-holder will be integrated within the Horticulture team, whose work is essential for the research mission of the Institute.
Key responsibilities include waste management, manual handling tasks, stock management and cleaning within a containment level 1 facility. Other duties include working with chemicals and dealing with biological waste.
Work environment includes a welcoming and collaborative laboratory setting with family-friendly benefits and development opportunities. The role reports to the Horticultural Facility Manager and works with the Horticultural Facility Supervisor and two other team members.
Responsibilities
- Waste management, manual handling tasks, stock management and cleaning within a containment level 1 facility.
- Work with chemicals and handling biological waste as part of daily duties.
- Provide support and assistance to other members of the Horticulture Team as needed.
Qualifications and experience
- Educated to GCSE level grade A-C or NVQ level 2 in a science subject, or equivalent practical experience.
- Experience of cleaning within an academic or scientific laboratory environment.
- Experience in containment facilities is desirable.
- Ability to adhere to strict protocols and maintain a high level of attention to detail.
- Previous experience and understanding of research needs is an advantage.

- Ability to build positive working relationships within the horticulture team and with colleagues across research, support and administration.
