Overview
Professor Sir Shankar Balasubramanian is seeking a PhD student to work on the structure and function of the genome. The position is based in the Balasubramanian Lab at the CRUK Cambridge Institute, with collaborative interactions with the Yusuf Hamied Department of Chemistry. The research focuses on genomics, computational biology and imaging, with interests in cancers such as breast, pancreas, brain, and colon. The Institute aims to expand the use of AI to generate research hypotheses and explore cancer biology. The Core Facilities provide access to state-of-the-art equipment, in-house expertise and training.
Project details
The student will join a team exploring the formation, dynamics and functions of four-stranded DNA G-quadruplex structures and modified DNA bases in the genome. The research includes mechanisms that regulate gene expression, DNA replication and genome stability, and how these affect cell state changes. The project emphasizes novel methods to investigate genome function, including mapping binding of nucleic acid-interacting drugs and small molecules, and genome sequencing of modified bases in relation to chromatin proteins.
Selected publications related to the group’s work include Genome Biology (2021, 2025), Nature Chemistry (2025), PNAS (2024, 2025), Nature Biotechnology (2023, 2023), and related venues.

Funding and duration
This is a four-year studentship funded by Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute. It covers university fees and includes an index-linked stipend starting at £22,500 per year.
