We are pleased to offer an exciting opportunity to join the University of Cambridge\’s Security Section as a Chief Security Patroller.
- Starting salary: £31,628 ¿ £34,218 (inclusive of a 25% salary supplement for unsociable hours).
- Contract type: Permanent.
- Hours: 42 hours per week on a regular shift pattern, including every second weekend off.
This is a permanent, full-time role requiring flexibility to work unsociable hours, including nights and weekends. In recognition of this, a 25% salary supplement is included in the advertised salary.
About The Role
As a Chief Security Patroller, you will play a vital role in maintaining the safety and security of the University\’s staff, students, and property. The Security Section is responsible for the protection of over 350 buildings across the University estate, delivering key services such as alarm monitoring, uniformed patrols, and rapid incident response. The team also operates a comprehensive CCTV system and works closely with University departments, Colleges, and external partners.
This role is central to our 24/7, year-round operations. You will be actively involved in the prevention and detection of crime, responding to a wide range of incidents, and ensuring the effective operation of our security services.
Key Responsibilities
- Delivering high-quality security services from the University Security Control Centre
- Conducting regular foot and vehicle patrols across the estate
- Responding swiftly and professionally to alarms, incidents, and non-emergency situations
- Supporting the management and resolution of security-related events
- Collaborating with departments, Colleges, and external agencies to maintain a safe environment
About You
The ideal candidate will be professional, courteous, and calm under pressure. You will have:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- A friendly and flexible approach to work.
- A full, clean UK driving licence (essential, due to the requirement to drive University vehicles).
- Experience in a customer-facing role (desirable).
- Previous experience in a security environment (desirable, but not essential).
All necessary training will be provided to ensure compliance with security industry standards and University protocols.
