Position Overview

The Patient Transporter assumes total responsibility for patients' welfare to and from various areas of the hospital by either wheelchair or litter. Under supervision, the person in this role provides safe, competent, and efficient transportation of patients across all areas and departments including X-ray, Ultrasound, Nuclear Medicine, Electrocardiogram, Outpatient Lab, EEG/EMG, Stress Lab, Vascular Lab, Emergency Department, PACU, Outpatient Clinic, Admitting, Morgue, Respiratory Therapy, Physical Therapy, ICU, Cast Room, Physician’s Offices and all patient floors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Safely transport patients using wheelchairs or litters between departments and care areas.
  • Transfer patients to and from beds, chairs, wheelchairs, and litters using proper body mechanics.
  • Monitor and manage IV bottles during transport; report any issues to nursing or IV staff.
  • Check and replace oxygen tanks as needed in collaboration with the Respiratory Therapy team.
  • Ensure safe handling and placement of medical equipment such as foley catheters, chest tubes, and drainage containers.
  • Respond appropriately in emergency situations during transport, ensuring patients receive immediate assistance.
  • Coordinate with nursing and clinical teams to maintain patient safety and comfort during transit.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Patient transport experience preferred, but not required
