The Maternity Suite at Cambridge Hospital is a beautiful unit with lovely views of downtown Boston and Harvard Square. It includes a Labor and Delivery (L&D) Unit and a Postpartum Unit and helps more than 1,100 growing families every year. The 7 bed labor unit has 3 triage bays and 2 ORs. We are proud of our multidisciplinary patient care, our culturally sensitive approach to labor and delivery, and some of the lowest C-section rates in Massachusetts. The Postpartum Unit consists of 12 private rooms with a level 1b continuing care nursery. This unit provides care for mothers and infants right after birth and through the early stages of postpartum to discharge. We foster a culturally sensitive approach to couplet care and early family bonding.

Summary

To provide clinical operations, service planning, business performance, and performance improvement to the Department. Clinical Operations include the direct supervision of all unit clinical and support staff, including accountability for employee competencies, evaluations, and annual reviews. The Nurse Manager provides leadership to staff to facilitate the resolution of conflicts, ensures the development, implementation and monitoring of systems for acquisitions and maintenance of equipment and supplies. The development, implementation and revision of unit clinical standards, policies, and procedures and collaborates within the service line, and across service lines and departments to ensure effective clinical operations.

Service Planning

Assessment of client/patient community health needs and development of programming to meet these needs. Assessment of staff and client/patient educational needs and development of programming to meet these needs. Facilitates interdisciplinary care of patients.

Business Performance

The Nurse Manager develops unit budget and monitors cost/unit measures and other business performance measures, develops innovations to increase efficiencies while maintaining or improving quality, and develops unit staff accountability for business performance.

  • Leading change: demonstrates familiarity with the psychology of change and is able to apply that body of knowledge to lead change within the unit and the service line.
  • Communication: effectively communicates and collaborates with diverse individuals, disciplines and departments throughout the organization and the community we serve.
  • Diversity: Understands how a diverse workforce affects the delivery of health services and integrates the organizational mission and vision with respect to diversity into all aspects of work.
  • Team Leadership: Understands the power of accomplishing organizational goals in teams. Develops facilitation skills that accelerate the work of teams.
  • Labor Relations: Demonstrates an understanding of labor relations and union regulations. Works collaboratively with union leadership with its members.
  • Staff development and evaluation: Works effectively with and provides feedback to staff to maximize development. Counsels staff and uses progressive disciplinary actions when necessary.

Performs other related duties as assigned or directed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science
  • Current Massachusetts Registered Nurse License.
  • Current AHA or ARC BLS required, ACLS and NRP required.
  • Five years’ clinical experience in department area.
  • Demonstrated leadership and management abilities.
