Main purpose of the job

As a Business Developer, you will join an established team of commercial and technical experts working with clients in the energy and industrial sectors. You will own the commercial responsibility for developing relationships, both new and existing, with the broad range of clients that Cambridge Consultants serves, from multinational blue‑chip companies to ambitious well‑funded start‑ups. This role has significant client contact, and you will use your knowledge, experience and network to engage with potential clients to find and drive opportunities where we can add disproportionate value to our clients and create and bring to market disruptive innovation. You will define work programmes and develop the commercial approach to bids, ideally working 'ahead of the RFP' where relevant to influence the innovation direction of bids. The brief is international, though expected to initially focus in the UK. You will be able to work on your own initiative and develop your own line of business. Developing key client relationships and repeat business built on trust is the cornerstone of our commercial approach, and your responsibilities will include an important element of client management during project delivery.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the commercial team in the Energy and Industrial Business Unit to identify, engage and onboard new clients in the Energy and Industrial sector.
  • Focus initially on climate tech (targeting technology disruptors) and industrial automation (targeting end users alongside tech disruptors).
  • Develop and own execution plans to onboard new clients and build strong relationships with key individuals within client and potential client organisations to enable further sales opportunities.
  • Work collaboratively with technical teams throughout the client journey.
  • Collaborate across Cambridge Consultants to develop the best technology solutions that solve clients’ problems or maximise market opportunities.
  • Build and maintain deep domain knowledge.
  • Build business opportunities globally, predominantly in Europe but open to engaging in wider regions such as North America or Asia‑Pacific.

You will also use your strong technical skills to communicate what Cambridge Consultants can deliver to potential clients, contributing significantly to the overall direction of development projects, often working on multiple projects simultaneously. Our technical team is based in Cambridge, UK, but frequent travel to conferences, events and client sites is required.

Minimum requirements

  • An excellent degree in a technical or science discipline is advantageous.
  • A passion for innovative technology solutions and solving complex problems.
  • Comfort with uncertainty and an ability to derive opportunity from ambiguous starting points.
  • A commercial understanding of what is valuable to our clients.
  • Experience working with clients in the sector selling highly innovative work similar to that offered at Cambridge Consultants.
