Our projects are highly diverse and require an appetite for rapid learning and problem solving. Recent work includes:
- Development of a novel imaging system based on multi-wavelength holography
- Design, simulation and manufacture of a custom ultrasonic measurement system
- Development of a miniaturised magnetic positioning system for a high-volume consumer product
- Teardown and reverse engineering of a complex high-power laser instrument for industrial application
- Technical analysis of a superconducting power distribution system
Responsibilities: You will work alongside a project team to deliver solutions for external customers, combining practical laboratory experimentation with simulation and physical modelling. The focus is optical physics and/or integrated photonics. You will have access to extensive in-house laboratory and prototyping facilities and collaborate with engineers and scientists from AI/algorithms, mechanical engineering, and electronic engineering. Work will be supported and guided by members of our Applied Science team.
Qualifications:
- Strong academic credentials with a solid foundation in physics
- Interest in working in the lab as well as conducting desk-based analysis
- A collaborative approach
- Interest in optical/photonic systems
- Ability to obtain UK security clearance (Security Check level)
- Completion of at least 2 years of an undergraduate degree by summer 2026
