The Cambrian Community Centre Gym is a small friendly community gym which focuses on supporting older people, often recovering from health or medical issues. It forms part of the Cambrian Community Centre which is a charitable not-for-profit environment in Richmond.
As a gym instructor at the Cambrian Community Centre you will be responsible for the supervision of the gym and gym users and for advising, supporting and encouraging gym users in working towards their exercise goals. You will be responsible for undertaking assessments and inductions and designing suitable exercise programmes for new gym users as well as maintaining all required digital and paper records, to include records of individual gym users and gym attendance and for checking and taking gym fee payments.
Details of Duties and Responsibilities:
- When on duty you will be responsible for supervising the safe and effective operation of the gym.
- You will greet users and check their payment arrangements taking payments from pay as you go users.
- You will encourage, support and advise gym users in their exercise activities at the gym.
- You will oversee the use of the gym equipment ensuring at all times that it is safely and appropriately used.
- You are responsible for monitoring the condition of the equipment and report any issues that need attention.
- You will maintain all user and gym records as required and take payments for gym fees as required.
- Ensure that at end of shift gym is tidy, clean and prepared for next shift.
- Complete procedures in regard to Exercise Referrals as directed, including assessment, induction and design of exercise programmes.
- Make contact with gym users who are not in attendance with special reference to those on Exercise Referral programme with a view to encouraging their return to the gym.
- Self-management of time to ensure that unplanned events e.g. callers to the gym, late running appointments, have minimal impact on routine tasks.
- Ensure that appropriate confidentiality is maintained in respect of user’s personal information, including health related information.
- Ensuring that communications are kept up to date- emails answered, phone calls taken and dealt with, messages passed on if necessary and all internal communications read and responded to promptly.
- Ensure that the Gym Manager is informed of any issues arising in relation to the gym, equipment or users.
- Keeping relevant training and professional membership up to date this includes current First Aid training.
- Attendance at team meetings and the Cambrian Community Centre’s Annual General Meeting which are all held outside of normal working hours.
These duties may vary from time to time, according to the needs of the Centre.
Notes:
- The hourly rate includes an allowance in recognition of the fact that you will need to arrive in good time before the start of your shift to ensure that you and the gym are ready to open the gym on time at the start of your shift, and you may also need to stay a little after the end of your shift to ensure that the gym is clean and tidy before you leave.
- As this post involves working with vulnerable adults, it is subject to a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check.
- In recognition of the role employees play at the Cambrian Community Centre, you are expected to attend the Annual General Meeting and to be involved in the monitoring of the performance of the organisation. After 6 months continuous service, you become a ‘member’ of the organisation which means you have voting rights at the Annual General Meeting.
The Lead for Cardiac Rehabilitation will set exercise programs for all users with a cardiac history, give ongoing advice to other team members, ensure that defibrillator is maintained and kept in good condition.
Qualifications:
- A minimum of exercise instructor/personal trainer qualification with exercise referral qualification or equivalent.
- Sport Rehabilitators and Physiotherapists welcome (with relevant degrees).
- Cardiac Phase IV training desirable but not essential.
