What you will do

  • Mechanical Engineering Apprenticeship: Our Mechanical Engineers operate on a scale and precision not even imagined by many other sectors. This is an opportunity to play a crucial role in the life cycle management of our unique equipment. You will maintain, install and build a huge range of machines, ensuring that high performance is maintained and that the highest safety standards are met. Exposure to duties will include the use of a computer based maintenance & stores system, isolation / making safe equipment, following prescribed preventative maintenance routines, responding to breakdown situations and applying continuous improvement techniques work. This covers a wide range of disciplines and equipment including:
  • Pneumatic and hydraulic systems
  • Fitting using hand skills
  • Turning using lathes
  • Maintaining mechanical devices
  • Overhead cranes & mobile plant
  • Pressure testing
  • Universal skills gained are:
    • Inspection and plant condition monitoring (plant maintenance)
    • Fault finding and diagnosis
    • Testing and calibrations
  • Electrical Engineering Apprenticeship: As an electrical craft maintenance engineer you will be responsible for maintaining the safety, reliability, quality & performance of the relevant equipment. This will involve preventative & breakdown maintenance, installation of equipment and continuous improvement techniques in an effort to reduce costs & improve efficiency. Exposure to duties will include the use of a computer based maintenance & stores system, isolation / making safe equipment, following prescribed preventative maintenance routines, responding to breakdown situations and apply continuous improvement techniques work. The tasks cover a wide range of disciplines and equipment including:
    • Safety critical systems
    • Overhead cranes & mobile plant
    • Motor maintenance (AC & DC)
    • Inverter and converter drive systems
    • Low voltage & high voltage distribution
    • Domestic and industrial installations
    • PC & PLC software
    • Assembling wiring testing electrical panels
    • Fitting using hand skills
    • Maintaining electrical systems
  • Universal skills gained are:
    • Application of IET regulations
    • Inspection and plant condition monitoring (plant maintenance)
    • Fault finding and diagnosis
    • Bench fitting and machining skills, drill, presses, lathe, grinding

    The Apprenticeship

    The successful candidate will be joining an established 3 – 4 year apprenticeship training program using nationally recognized qualification, leading to a trade specific Advanced Manufacturing Engineering Apprenticeship. This apprenticeship is delivered by Coleg Cambria. The three year period will consist of:

    • Year 1: Full time college study (Level 2 & 3)
    • Year 2 & 3: Onsite with one day release to college. This includes a rotation within different departments/functions and completion of NVQ

    Experience will include aspects of:

    • Maintenance engineering & planning
    • Environmental & energy awareness
    • Health & safety working (IOSH)
    • Continuous improvement techniques

    What you will need

    To be considered for our apprenticeship programme you must have a minimum of 5 GCSEs or equivalent (including English Language, Maths & Science) at Grade C/4 or above. We are looking for people who:

    • Have strong communication and listening skills
    • Are keen to learn
    • Are reliable – with good timekeeping skills
    • Are able to work in a team
    • Are interested in the engineering industry

    You will also need to have a genuine interest in engineering and show a passion for this type of work.
