Are you a registered Pharmacy Technician looking for something new? We are looking to recruit and develop a Pharmacy Technician team. We therefore need someone with enthusiasm as well as experience to help us get the team set up and running. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced, registered Pharmacy Technician who is interested to explore and see what general practice has to offer.
Main duties of the job
The purpose of the role is to support the General Practitioners by managing the workload associated with patient prescription requests, medication queries, medicines reconciliation, to support the delivery of high-quality, safe, and cost-effective prescribing within the practice. The postholder will in time also be required to work within a larger pharmacy technician team providing both the support described above, and dispensing services, as we train our existing dispensary staff.
Job responsibilities
- Repeat Prescribing Management
- Process repeat prescription requests in line with practice protocols.
- Identify patients requiring medication reviews and arrange appropriate review with appropriate clinician.
- Resolve medication queries from patients, community pharmacies, and care homes.
- Undertake medication reconciliation following hospital discharge and outpatient appointments.
- Support with medication reviews within scope of competence/protocols.
- Identify and action prescribing safety alerts.
- Monitor high-risk medicines in accordance with local and national guidance.
- Support implementation of local formularies and prescribing guidelines.
- Patient Safety & Clinical Governance
- Support systems for monitoring and recall of long-term condition medications.
- Assist with audits related to prescribing and medicines safety.
- Contribute to significant event reviews involving medicines.
- Ensure compliance with CQC standards relating to medicines management.
- Provide advice to patients regarding medication use, synchronisation, and adherence (within competency).
- Support patients with medication queries and signpost appropriately.
- Promote self-care and understanding of prescribed treatments.
- Care Homes & Vulnerable Patients
- Support medication reviews and prescription processes for care home residents.
- Liaise with care home staff and community pharmacies to resolve medication issues.
- Work closely with GPs, nurses, clinical pharmacists, practice dispensary and administrative staff.
- Liaise with community pharmacies and secondary care colleagues.
- Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings where appropriate.
- Information Management
- Maintain accurate and contemporaneous patient records.
- Use clinical systems (e.g. EMIS, SystmOne) effectively.
- Ensure data protection and confidentiality in line with GDPR requirements.
- Professional Development
- Maintain registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
- Participate in appraisal and continuing professional development (CPD).
- Work within competence and escalates appropriately.

- Clinical knowledge and Skills
- Demonstrate an understanding of medicines optimisation principles.
- Aware of prescribing governance and patient safety.
- Ability to communicate information effectively with people at all levels by telephone, email and face to face.
- Demonstrate an understanding of confidentiality and data protection.
- Demonstrate personal accountability, emotional resilience and work well under pressure.
- Completed the 15-month PCPEP training programme.
- Good clinical system IT knowledge.

- Enhanced Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) check.
- Occupational Health clearance.
- Evidence of Professional Indemnity.
- Evidence of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) commensurate with the role.
- Qualifications
- Registered Pharmacy Technician with GPhC.
- Level 3 Diploma in Pharmaceutical Science (or equivalent).
- GCS (or equivalent) English and Maths at Grade C (4) or above.
- Evidence of CPD.
- CPPE training on Medicines Reconciliation.
- Experience
- Experience of working in a community, hospital or primary care pharmacy (dispensary).
- Understanding of repeat prescribing processes.
- Experience of using pharmacy or clinical systems.
