Calvary Health Centre is offering an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated Deputy Practice Manager to join our friendly and supportive GP practice team. In this key role, you will work closely with the Practice Manager to ensure the smooth and efficient running of the practice. You will support the day-to-day management of services, staff, and operational systems, helping us remain compliant, well organised, and responsive to the needs of our patients. This position is ideal for someone with experience in General Practice or Primary Care who brings strong organisational skills and a collaborative, team-focused mindset.

Main duties of the job

  • Support the Practice Manager in overseeing daily operations across the practice
  • Lead, supervise, and support administrative and reception teams
  • Assist with HR processes including recruitment, training, and performance management
  • Ensure compliance with CQC standards, clinical governance, and practice policies
  • Oversee patient services, ensuring a positive and efficient experience
  • Support the implementation of new systems, processes, and service improvements
  • Deputise for the Practice Manager when required

We are a friendly team consisting of clinical and non-clinical roles. Our aim is to build a happy, productive team that values their colleagues. Our team includes 2 partners, 2 salaried GPs, 1 Registrar, 1 Practice Nurse, Practice Manager, reception supervisor, and 3 receptionists/care navigators.

Job responsibilities

  • Support the Practice Manager in the overall management of the practice
  • Act as deputy in the Practice Manager's absence
  • Assist in staff supervision, performance management, and appraisals
  • Promote a positive and professional working environment
  • Support recruitment, induction, and training of staff
  • Oversee daily administrative and reception operations
  • Ensure compliance with CQC regulations and NHS contractual requirements
  • Contribute to practice policies and procedures
  • Support implementation of new services and practice developments
  • Monitor and improve patient access and service delivery
  • Assist with HR processes including sickness absence, annual leave, and disciplinary procedures
  • Ensure compliance with employment law and practice HR policies
  • Support claims, QOF, PCN, and enhanced service income
  • Assist with budget planning and reporting
  • Support contract management and liaison with NHS bodies
  • Support use of clinical systems
  • Ensure data protection and GDPR compliance
  • Support IT systems and liaise with external providers
  • Manage and respond to complaints in line with NHS guidance
  • Support patient engagement and feedback processes
  • Ensure high standards of confidentiality and patient care

Person Specification

  • Experience of working in primary care or general practice
  • Experience of line management and leading a team
  • Knowledge of the regulatory frameworks governing general practice (e.g. CQC, GMS contract)
  • Excellent literacy and numeracy skills
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with people from a wide range of backgrounds
  • Confident working with IT and learning new systems
