Role Overview
Supervision of night shift Deck Department crew on the freight run.
Functional Responsibilities/Key Tasks
• Manage the Deck Department night crew work routines.
• Assist the Loading Officer with vehicle deck and cargo operations.
• Operate the Bow / Stern Ramps and Mezzanine Deck(s) as ordered / required.
• Accountable for the checking and stowage of Deck Department stores on arrival onboard.
• Ensure that Vehicle Deck and other cargo securing arrangements are in place and informing the Bridge that Vehicle Deck is secured for sea. In addition, responsible for ensuring regular Vehicle Deck and cargo checks are completed on passage.
• Accountable for Deck Department tools and their safe operating condition.
• Supervise mooring operations as directed, highlighting any deficiencies / defects in any mooring equipment onboard to the Chief Officer.
• Issue of all Safety Equipment (as required) to Deck Department crew and the ensuring that the correct PPE is worn by Deck Department crew in accordance with the companies PPE Matrix.
• Obtain Permits to Work as required for designated tasks.
• Manage Gangway Security Routines out with Nightwatchman hours.
• Bridge lookout duties as required.
• Any other duty or task that can be reasonably expected of a Leading Hand as directed by the Master, Chief Officer or Deck Officer.
Qualifications, Skills, and Experience
Essential Criteria
• STCW II/5 Certificate of Competency as an Able Seafarer Deck.
• Navigational Watch Rating certificate.
• Valid ENG 1 medical certificate.
• ISPS Designated Security Duties Certificate
• Proficiency in Survival Craft & Rescue Boats Certificate
• Crowd Management Certificate
• Passenger & Cargo Safety and Hull Integrity Training Certificate
• Fast Rescue Boats certificate
• Recommendation for promotion on two appraisals by two separate Heads of Department
Desirable Criteria
• Effective communication skills and smart in appearance.
• Experience acting up in the Higher Grade would be advantageous.
• Be safety focused and familiar with CoSWP, permit to work and risk assessment processes within the company.
• Be customer focused and have a clear understanding of the customer interface and have a proactive approach to customer care.
