About the role

As a UAS Technical Lead you will report pastorally to a Team Leader or Engineering Manager and provide functional leadership to a multi-disciplinary project team to deliver end-to-end solutions to complex design and integration problems in line with customer requirements. You will typically be at Senior Engineer or Principal Engineer level and will take ownership of internal capability development and continuous improvement activities within the products.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical project leadership into delivery projects.
  • Accountable for technical execution and delivery.
  • Ownership, creation and management of project level technical artefacts such as the Work Breakdown Structure, Engineering Management Plan, or Verification and Validation plan.
  • Lead technical interfacing with customers, suppliers, and partners.
  • Provide primary interface between technical engineering team and project manager for enabling successful delivery.
  • Collaborate with the Project Manager to identify technical risk areas, requirements, and scope of work to enable work package definition.
  • Own the capture, derivation and through-life management of requirements, developing overall solutions that meet internal and external customer needs within required timescales.
  • Own the through-life system test approach.
  • Prepare material for, and lead, internal and customer facing design reviews as required.
  • Manage technical change requests and implementation of technical changes.
  • Delegation of, review and approve engineering artifacts including design data and technical documentation.
  • Ability to provide on-the-job mentoring of team members.
  • Champion improvements in our company culture in areas such as Health and Safety, Quality, Continuous Improvement.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Skills and Experience

Qualification: Bachelors or Master’s degree, with Honors, in an Engineering or Science subject or relevant experience.

Essential

  • Deep working knowledge of systems engineering and the end-to-end engineering lifecycle.
  • Ability to apply Systems Thinking principles across the lifecycle.
  • Proven ability to understand the customer Concept of Operations, and derive both user and system requirements from this.
  • Excellent communicator, able to collaborate and influence effectively at all levels.
  • Self-starting with demonstrable project-level organisational and planning skills.
  • Demonstrable problem-solving ability, working with others to tight timescales.
  • Demonstrable experience of working within both traditional / waterfall and agile engineering life cycles.
  • Demonstrable application of design for manufacture principles.
  • Experience of developing and enhancing customers / supplier relationships.
  • Excellent technical writing and compelling presentation skills.
  • Experience of checking and approving technical reports and design artefacts.
  • Experience of applying Configuration Management in an engineering environment.
  • Aware of product safety methodologies and real-world application for generation of a system safety case.

Desirable

  • Substantial experience of relevant design packages.
  • Experience of UAS Entry Into Service with a NATO defence customer.
  • Structural design, analysis and test, including composite materials.
  • Design, integration and test of electro-mechanical systems, including powerplants.
  • Electrical and avionics systems integration experience.
  • Experience in the application of modern manufacturing techniques.
  • Experience of full design cycle for volume production.
  • Knowledge and application of civil / military aerospace standards.
  • Design or systems engineering experience in UAS and associated systems.

Personal Attributes

  • Must be a British Citizen or have an existing right to work in the UK.
  • Ability to commit to occasional national and international travel.
  • A full valid UK driving license.
  • Must be able to work onsite routinely, minimum 3 days per week.
  • Ability to hold Security Clearance – 5 years residence in the UK.
