The Refrigeration Design Engineer is responsible for producing high-quality technical designs for commercial and industrial refrigeration systems. The role supports concept development, detailed engineering, equipment selection, and technical documentation to ensure systems meet performance, safety, and regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Design & Engineering
- Develop refrigeration system designs, including DX, CO2, ammonia, glycol/secondary systems, chillers, and heat pumps.
- Perform refrigeration load calculations, energy modelling, and system performance analysis.
- Produce engineering drawings: P&IDs, schematics, layout plans, equipment schedules.
- Prepare technical documentation for tenders, construction, and commissioning phases.
- Select and size components (compressors, heat exchangers, valves, pipework, controls).
- Technical Compliance
- Ensure designs comply with relevant standards (EN378, F-Gas, PED, ASHRAE, building regulations).
- Carry out risk assessments and support HAZOP reviews where required.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of refrigerants, low-GWP technologies, and regulatory changes.
- Project Support
- Work with project managers, installation teams, and clients to define technical requirements.
- Provide design support throughout installation, commissioning, and handover.
- Liaise with suppliers for equipment specifications, pricing, and technical queries.
Required Skills & Experience
- Technical Qualifications
- Degree or HNC/HND in Mechanical Engineering, Refrigeration Engineering, Building Services, or related field.
- Strong understanding of thermodynamics and refrigeration cycles.
- Professional Experience
- 2-5+ years of experience in refrigeration, HVAC, mechanical engineering, or a similar role.
- Experience designing CO2, ammonia, or commercial refrigeration systems (desirable for senior roles).
- Proficiency with AutoCAD; experience with Revit/BIM, SolidWorks, or refrigeration modelling tools (advantage).
