A highly regarded, multi-disciplinary Consultancy is seeking an experienced Principal Marine Design Engineer to join its expanding team in Newcastle upon Tyne. Applications are also invited from Senior-level engineers with a strong background in marine and coastal design who are ready to take the next step in their career. The firm is recognised for delivering innovative and sustainable civil and structural engineering solutions across the UK, with a particularly strong reputation in marine infrastructure design.
The Consultancy's Marine team is involved in a wide range of technically challenging and high-profile projects that shape and protect coastal environments and port facilities. Its experience includes the design and refurbishment of harbour and quay walls, piers, jetties, breakwaters, marinas and berthing facilities, as well as coastal protection and land reclamation schemes. The team combines practical engineering knowledge with creative problem-solving to deliver safe, efficient and resilient infrastructure in demanding environments.
The successful candidate will take a senior technical and leadership role in the delivery of these projects, overseeing the design and assessment of marine structures and ensuring outputs meet the highest technical and professional standards. Responsibilities will include managing the preparation and review of designs, drawings and specifications; undertaking structural and geotechnical analysis using recognised design software; and ensuring compliance with industry codes, standards and Health and Safety legislation such as the CDM Regulations. The role will also involve liaising with clients, contractors and statutory authorities, attending site meetings and inspections, and providing clear technical guidance to internal teams.
As a Principal Marine Design Engineer, you will play a key role in developing junior staff, providing mentorship and promoting technical excellence throughout the team. You will also contribute to business development by maintaining client relationships, identifying new opportunities and supporting the preparation of bids and proposals.
Applicants should hold a bachelor's or master's degree in Civil Engineering and be Chartered or Incorporated with a relevant professional institution, or be well on the path to achieving Chartered status. Significant post-graduate experience within marine or coastal engineering is required, including a demonstrable ability to deliver robust and practical design solutions. Excellent communication and report-writing skills, a strong grasp of design principles and construction methods, and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously are essential.
