An established multi-disciplinary company, working on major projects across the UK & Ireland, is looking for a Senior Highway Engineer to join its Highways & Transportation team in North Leeds. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced engineer looking to play a key role in the delivery of major UK and Irish transport infrastructure projects, while progressing their technical and leadership career within a growing team.
The role would suit a motivated professional with 8-15 years' post-graduate experience, strong design capability, and a desire to work on complex, high-profile transportation schemes focusing on multi-million pound design and build schemes.
Role
You will work on projects such as:
- Highways and major roads
- Bridges and structures
- Bus Rapid Transit (BRT)
- Active travel (cycleways and pedestrian schemes)
- Public transport infrastructure
Projects span the full asset lifecycle, from early feasibility and modelling through detailed design, construction support, and long-term asset management.
Senior Highway Engineer Responsibilities
- Lead and contribute to the design of highways and transportation schemes
- Prepare detailed design drawings, specifications and technical reports
- Ensure compliance with UK and Irish design standards
- Support project delivery to programme and budget
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and external stakeholders
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to technical excellence
Senior Highway Engineer Essential Requirements
- Honours degree in Civil Engineering (or equivalent)
- 8-15 years' post-graduate experience within civil engineering
- Minimum 5 years' experience in transportation/highways design
- Chartered Engineer status (or working towards chartership)
- Strong knowledge of relevant standards (e.g. DMRB, Manual for Streets, LTN 1/20, MCHW)
- Experience preparing works contract documentation and specifications
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- High attention to detail and commitment to quality
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced consultancy environment
- Strong problem-solving skills and professional judgement
- Fluent or highly proficient in written and spoken English
Senior Highway Engineer Desirable Experience
- 3D road design software such as Civil 3D, OpenRoads or MX
- Familiarity with TII and NTA project management guidelines
- Experience on large-scale public infrastructure or transport programmes
