I'm currently working with a construction engineering and design consultancy that is looking to appoint a Principal Engineer into their established Engineering Design team based in Speke. You'd be joining a team of 20 engineers, made up of civil, structural and geotechnical professionals. You'd be focusing on temporary works projects, supporting major infrastructure, public sector frameworks and complex construction projects across the UK.

The Opportunity

This is a senior technical and leadership role within the Engineering team, offering a blend of technical authority, client-facing responsibility, team leadership and commercial oversight. The organisation places strong emphasis on long-term career development, actively shaping roles around individuals rather than forcing people into rigid structures. There is clear support for professional development, leadership progression and continued technical excellence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leading the definition of technical scope and client requirements, challenging and shaping remits where required
  • Developing and leading fee proposals in line with delegated authority
  • Managing and coordinating the day-to-day workload of engineers and technical staff
  • Ensuring technical compliance with legal requirements, CDM Regulations, and internal SHE and Quality Management Systems
  • Overseeing and contributing to the production of calculations, drawings, reports and design risk assessments
  • Identifying and implementing value engineering opportunities with appropriate approvals
  • Acting as the lead technical representative in client and project meetings
  • Managing financial and commercial aspects of projects alongside engineering and commercial management
  • Monitoring programme, budget and delivery performance
  • Providing leadership to direct and indirect reports, including performance reviews, workload management and professional development
  • Promoting best practice, innovation and a culture of technical excellence
  • Maintaining strong client and peer relationships to support repeat business and future opportunities

The Ideal Candidate

This role would suit an experienced senior engineer who is comfortable operating at both technical and strategic level. You'll ideally have:

  • Chartered status with a relevant professional institution (e.g. CEng or equivalent)
  • Significant experience working at Principal Engineer level or equivalent
  • A strong background in construction engineering or design-for-construction environments
  • Proven experience leading teams, managing clients and delivering complex engineering projects

What's on Offer

  • Long-term career progression within a stable and growing consultancy
  • Flexible working arrangements
  • Competitive holiday allowance with the option to buy additional leave
  • Enhanced pension scheme
  • Share and incentive schemes
  • A people-first culture with genuine investment in professional development
