Are you a Senior Temporary Works Design Engineer looking for something a bit more technical, a bit more challenging and a lot more interesting than the standard consultancy project pipeline? This is an opportunity to join one of the UK's leading specialist Civil Engineering and tunnelling contractors, working on major infrastructure and underground engineering projects across the UK and internationally.
With over 40 years in the industry, the business has built a reputation for delivering some of the country's most complex tunnelling, shaft construction and heavy Civil Engineering schemes, alongside a growing portfolio of reinforced concrete and above-ground structural projects. Their Leeds office plays a key role within the wider engineering function and, due to continued project wins and an increasing workload, they're now looking to bring in a Senior Temporary Works Design Engineer to support major Design & Build projects across both tunnelling and structural engineering sectors.
This is very much a hands-on engineering role where you'll be heavily involved from early-stage methodology and tender support right through to detailed design and live construction delivery. You'll work closely with operational teams, site teams and the wider design function to develop practical, buildable temporary works and construction engineering solutions on technically challenging projects.
The variety is a huge part of the attraction here. Typical work can include shaft designs, excavation support systems, crane platforms, microtunnelling and pipejacking works, reinforced concrete temporary works, earth retention, formwork systems, settlement assessments and underground support structures. There's also involvement in above-ground structural projects linked to concrete frames and specialist Civil Engineering works.
The business is known for delivering projects where buildability and engineering practicality genuinely matter, so this role would suit someone who enjoys problem solving and working closely with delivery teams rather than sitting purely in a consultancy design environment detached from construction.
You'll be joining a highly experienced engineering team and will also play a key role in mentoring and developing junior engineers within the office. They're looking for someone who enjoys taking ownership of projects, supporting others technically and helping drive quality across the team.
The successful candidate will ideally be Chartered, or close to achieving Chartership, through ICE or IStructE and will have strong experience within temporary works, underground structures, tunnelling or heavy Civil Engineering environments. A solid understanding of BS5975, structural engineering principles and geotechnical considerations is important, alongside the ability to manage projects and communicate effectively with both internal and external stakeholders.
Experience across steel, reinforced concrete, excavation support or underground structures would be highly beneficial, as would previous involvement in Design & Build or contractor-led engineering environments.
The Leeds office offers a technically strong but down-to-earth working environment where engineers are trusted with responsibility and given exposure to genuinely complex projects from day one. The business has been heavily involved in nationally significant infrastructure schemes including HS2, Thames Tideway and Crossrail, alongside major water, rail and energy projects throughout the UK.
Alongside a strong salary, they offer an excellent wider benefits package including enhanced holidays, pension contributions, healthcare options, life assurance and long-term progression opportunities within a growing specialist contractor that continues to invest heavily in its engineering capability and people.
