An independently owned building services consultancy is seeking a driven Senior Mechanical Engineer to join its Birmingham-based MEP team. This is a strategic hire with a clear pathway to becoming the Director's right-hand and progressing through Principal, Associate, Associate Director and ultimately Partner level over the next 5-10 years.
About the Practice
The consultancy has been established for over two decades. The MEP group currently sits at around six engineers and delivers projects across:
- Commercial & Industrial
- Government & Public Sector
- Healthcare
Work spans London (65-75%), Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Midlands. Most schemes involve existing buildings, so regular site presence is expected. Projects are typically developed to Stage 4 detailed design, with Stage 4A and beyond undertaken by contractors.
The Opportunity
This role is aimed at a senior mechanical engineer with strong technical delivery skills and genuine commercial awareness. You'll take ownership of detailed mechanical design, lead projects, engage directly with clients and gradually support fee proposals and account management alongside the Director.
You'll be encouraged to integrate into the business, influence its future direction and eventually step into a senior leadership role. The practice places a strong emphasis on professional development, supporting Chartership and additional accreditations.
What You'll Be Doing
- Leading detailed design of mechanical building services, including HVAC systems, LTHW/CHW distribution, ventilation, public health and low-carbon technologies.
- Undertaking mechanical surveys, feasibility studies and reporting on existing systems.
- Working closely with clients, design teams, suppliers and contractors.
- Managing the technical and financial success of projects.
- Preparing calculations, design proposals, tender packages and clear written reports.
- Supporting site supervision, witnessing commissioning and maintenance-related audits.
- Representing the business professionally in meetings and client interactions.
What We're Looking For
- Strong experience (typically 5+ years) in mechanical building services design within a consultancy environment.
- Competence in detailed mechanical design across commercial/industrial/government/healthcare sectors.
- Comfortable with site work and existing building assessments.
- Commercially minded, confident with client interaction and keen to contribute to fee proposals.
- Familiarity with mechanical design software and BIM workflows (AutoCAD/Revit desirable).
- Someone who thrives in an office-based environment, collaborates well and drives projects forward.
- Ambition to progress into leadership - not just a delivery-only engineer.
Salary & Benefits
- Up to £65,000
- Strong professional development support (including Chartership)
- Clear, structured progression into senior leadership
- Opportunity to work directly with Directors on major clients and accounts
