A highly regarded building services consultancy is making a significant strategic investment into a newly established Birmingham office, and is now looking to appoint a Principal or Associate Mechanical Engineer to sit at the heart of that growth.

The business has built an outstanding reputation across the North of England over a number of years, consistently ranking as a top-three preferred consultant for several of the UK's leading Tier 1 contractors. Having made the decision to expand southwards, Birmingham represents a serious long-term commitment - with plans already in place to extend further into London over the next two to three years. This is not a speculative hire. The office is operational, the workload is live, and the team is already delivering.

The role sits between the Mechanical Director and the junior team - a genuinely senior position with real influence over both day-to-day delivery and the longer-term shape of the Birmingham mechanical offering. You will take ownership of detailed design delivery across a broad and technically interesting project portfolio, engage directly with clients and stakeholders, and play a key part in mentoring and developing the engineers around you.

The pipeline is strong. The majority of work sits at detailed design stage and spans healthcare - including large-scale MEP schemes - alongside education, residential, student accommodation, commercial, and heritage refurbishment projects. The business carries a full order book and continues to take on new commissions, drawing on resource from across the wider group where needed.

The Role

  • Lead mechanical design delivery across a varied portfolio of projects at detailed design stage
  • Act as the senior technical point of contact for clients, contractors, and project teams
  • Work closely with the Mechanical Director to manage workload, resource, and quality
  • Mentor and support graduate and intermediate engineers within the team
  • Contribute to business development and the continued growth of the Birmingham office

About You

  • Substantial mechanical building services design experience within a consultancy environment
  • Proven capability at detailed design stage across complex project types - healthcare, education, or commercial experience particularly relevant
  • Confident engaging directly with clients and external stakeholders as a trusted technical voice
  • Strong grounding in mechanical fundamentals - the ability to demonstrate real technical depth matters here
  • The ambition and temperament to take on a senior role within a growing office, with an eye on the long term
  • Permanent, employed candidates only

The Business

  • Established multi-office building services consultancy with a strong reputation across the North of England
  • Top-three consultant status with multiple leading Tier 1 contractors
  • Broad project portfolio spanning healthcare, education, residential, student accommodation, commercial, and heritage sectors
  • New Birmingham office with active workload and a clear growth trajectory
  • Ambitious expansion plans including a London office within the next two to three years
  • A team environment built around quality, long-term relationships, and doing the work properly

This is the kind of opportunity that comes along when a business with genuine pedigree decides to back itself in a new market. If you want to join at the point where you can shape something, rather than inherit it, this is worth a conversation.

Calibre Search promote equality in the workplace and we welcome applications from all suitably skilled or qualified candidates regardless of their sex, race, disability, religion/beliefs, sexual orientation or age. We act as both an employment agency and employment business.
