calfordseaden is a leading multi-disciplined construction and property consultancy. We provide a definitive range of services to the UK building and construction industry covering civil and structural engineering; chartered building and quantity surveying; project management; architecture and master planning; mechanical and electrical engineering; sustainability; fire consultancy, building information modelling (BIM); and health and safety.

The role:

The role involves collaborating with the Fire Safety Engineers in developing a Fire Safety Strategy for a variety of projects (buildings and infrastructure) utilising advanced computational modelling tools such as Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Evacuation modelling and Radiation modelling. This collaboration will result in effective and robust solutions developed through computer modelling studies for our clients in a timely and presentable manner.

What you’ll be doing:

  1. Developing modelling methodologies through a Qualitative Design Review (QDR);
  2. Interrogating architectural and structural building models;
  3. Utilising PyroSim software to create the geometries for CFD modelling;
  4. Running the modelling in Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) environment;
  5. Utilising Smokeview (SMV) for visualization of the output and results;
  6. Using Pathfinder to create geometries for evacuation modelling;
  7. Using CFAST modelling tool for two-zone fire models;
  8. Using MS Office for presenting the results in excel sheets, reports and presentation;
  9. Radiation modelling; and
  10. Attending in person and online meetings with Design Team and Approving Authorities and assist in explaining the modelling methodology and results.

What you’ll need:

Qualifications

  • A Degree level qualification in the relevant field i.e. Mechanical Engineering, Fire Engineering, Building Physics or an engineering course.
  • Professional membership with relevant institutes i.e. IMechE, IFE, CIBSE, SFPE.

Knowledge

  • Demonstrate a general knowledge and understanding of all aspects of Fire Safety Engineering such as fire behaviour design, radiation calculations, smoke ventilation system and evacuation parameters applicable for utilising computer modelling tools.
  • Relevant experience with knowledge of the CIBSE Guide E, SFPE Handbook, Smoke Control Association guidance documents and British Standards i.e. BS 7974 series is preferred, but knowledge in other standards such as NFPA, IBC is welcomed.
  • Relevant experience of delivering CFD/Fire Engineering projects.

Skills

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong organisational ability.
  • IT literacy with proficiency in the use of a range of design software such as MS Office, Bluebeam, AutoCAD and BIM.
