Instructional Designer – Role Overview

We are seeking an experienced and creative Instructional Designer to join the team at the Volkswagen Group National Learning Centre in Milton Keynes.

This is an exciting opportunity to shape the future of learning across the Volkswagen Group brands, including Volkswagen, Audi, Škoda, SEAT/CUPRA and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles. Working within a high‑performing team, you will design, develop and continuously improve engaging learning solutions that drive individual performance, support business objectives and deliver measurable results.

As an Instructional Designer, you will combine learning expertise, creativity and technology to transform complex technical and business requirements into innovative, learner‑centred experiences. You will work closely with stakeholders, subject matter experts and learning teams to create impactful training solutions across a range of delivery methods and technologies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop engaging learning solutions across multiple formats, including:
    • E‑learning modules
    • Virtual classrooms and webinars
    • Face‑to‑face training programmes
    • Self‑directed learning resources
    • Assessments and knowledge checks
    • Performance support materials and job aids
    • Instructional videos and multimedia content
    • Social, collaborative and community‑based learning experiences
  • Analyse learning needs and business requirements to design effective, performance‑focused solutions.
  • Regionalise and adapt globally developed content to meet local market, business and brand requirements.
  • Apply instructional design best practice, adult learning principles and learning technologies to enhance learner engagement and performance.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders and subject matter experts to ensure learning solutions are aligned with organisational objectives.
  • Evaluate learning effectiveness and use data, feedback and insight to drive continuous improvement.
  • Contribute to the development of innovative, future‑focused learning strategies, including the use of emerging technologies and AI‑assisted content development tools.
  • Support the successful delivery of Volkswagen Group and Calex objectives, ensuring quality standards, KPIs and SLAs are achieved.

About You

The ideal candidate will have proven experience in instructional design, learning content development and stakeholder consultation, with a passion for creating exceptional learning experiences.

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Demonstrable experience designing and developing digital, virtual and classroom‑based learning solutions.
  • Advanced proficiency in Articulate Storyline 360 and Rise.
  • Experience using Adobe Creative Cloud applications, including Photoshop and Illustrator.
  • Knowledge of HTML‑based content development, either through direct coding or content conversion tools.
  • Strong understanding of learning management technologies, including LMS, LXP, SCORM and xAPI.
  • Experience incorporating AI‑assisted tools into content development workflows.
  • Ability to storyboard, script and develop visually engaging learning content.
  • Strong stakeholder management, consultancy and communication skills.
  • Experience managing multiple projects and competing priorities effectively.
  • Knowledge of learning evaluation methodologies and the ability to make evidence‑based recommendations for improvement.

Salary & Benefits

  • Salary up to £35,000, depending on experience
  • Car allowance of £328.50 per month (£3,942 per annum)

Pre‑employment Checks

Calex will undertake the relevant/standard employment checks with any successful candidate. This includes contacting all nominated references, as well as checking candidate ID, driving licence (if appropriate) and right to work in the UK. Some roles may also be subject to further pre‑employment checks (confirmation will be provided through the recruitment process). The nature of this role may necessitate that we undertake a DBS check.

Employment

The successful candidate will be employed by Calex UK (www.calexuk.com). Calex are a specialist automotive training provider and provide training staff and expertise including Trainers, Developers, Digital Learning Experts, and Administrators to Volkswagen Group UK. The successful candidate will join an established team, at the VWG National Learning Centre in Milton Keynes.

Although Calex UK is on the register of Worker and Temporary Worker licensed sponsors, there is not an opportunity of sponsor for this specific role.

Place of Work

Volkswagen Group National Learning Centre, Wymbush, Milton Keynes

We currently operate hybrid working, with at least 60% of working time based at the National Learning Centre and up to 40% remote working, subject to business requirements. Occasional travel to other Volkswagen Group sites, retailers and partner locations may be required.
