We’re looking for an experienced Senior Information Compliance Officer to join our Information Governance team on a 12-months contract, helping ensure the public can exercise their information rights with confidence.
The Role
Working closely with the Information Manager, you’ll be a key member of a small specialist team, responsible for handling information rights requests. You’ll take ownership of a varied caseload, including Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act (FOISA), Environmental Information Regulations (EIRs) and data subject rights requests, guiding cases from receipt through to compliant and timely response. This is a role for a confident professional who enjoys working with complex legislation, engaging constructively with stakeholders, and balancing accuracy with pragmatism in a fast paced, deadline driven environment.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Managing and responding to FOISA, EIR and data subject rights requests in line with statutory requirements
- Acting as a first point of contact for requesters, ensuring requests are logged, acknowledged and progressed efficiently
- Conducting thorough searches for information and working closely with colleagues across the business to identify information in scope
- Drafting clear, accurate and well-reasoned responses, advising on disclosure, exemptions and associated risks
- Providing high-quality advice and guidance to colleagues on information rights law and best practice
- Supporting internal reviews, complaints and engagement with external regulators where required
- Keeping up to date with legislative developments and case law
- Monitoring performance against KPIs and contributing to reporting and continuous improvement
- Supporting information governance activities more broadly, including data protection and records management
- Contributing to training, awareness sessions, policy development and internal working groups
What We’re Looking For
Essential:
- Proven experience in information governance or compliance within the public sector
- Strong, practical knowledge of FOISA, EIRs, UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018
- Experience responding directly to requests for information from the public and stakeholders
- High level of IT literacy, including Microsoft Purview eDiscovery and Adobe Acrobat Pro for redaction
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex information clearly
- Strong organisational skills, attention to detail and sound judgement
- Ability to manage competing priorities and work to statutory deadlines
- Degree or diploma level education, or equivalent professional experience
Desirable:
- Scottish Freedom of Information Practitioner Certificate
- Data Protection Practitioner Certificate (or equivalent)
- Experience of records management in the Scottish public sector, including knowledge of the Public Records (Scotland) Act 2011
- Membership of a relevant professional body
