Positioned within the Strategic Infrastructure Service, the Traffic Engineering Team plays a vital role in maintaining and enhancing the safety and functionality of our road network, crucial for supporting the community’s well-being and economic development. These posts are an opportunity to be at the heart of shaping the strength and safety of the highway environment in Calderdale.

Our focus is on highway safety, and this encompasses both Highway and Traffic Engineering ensuring our roads are efficiently designed, managed, remain safe and meet legal standards. We are seeking applications across both disciplines.

  • Engineer (Traffic) – 3 posts
    • These roles are part of a team delivering traffic schemes and contributing to improvements in highway safety.
    • You will be responsible for preparing design solutions, processing permanent and experimental Traffic Regulation Orders, ensuring that the Council complies with legislative requirements, and undertaking work programming, estimating, supervision and reporting on scheme progress.
    • Other responsibilities will include co-ordinating and recording Traffic Regulation Orders (including map based), responding to queries from elected Members and the public, and acting as a focal point for technical advice.
    • You will also be required to carry out site visits and produce feasibility studies including the design of signing and lining for minor traffic and parking improvement schemes recommended for progression.
  • Engineer (Highways) – 2 posts
    • These roles are part of a team delivering highway schemes and contribute to the delivery of the Integrated Transport objectives of the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement.
    • You will be responsible for preparing suitable design solutions for highway safety and improvement schemes, ensuring that the Council complies with the requirements of current legislation, undertaking work programming, estimating, supervision and reporting on scheme progress.
    • Other responsibilities will include contributing towards and delivering a broad range of other civil engineering projects covering areas such as public realm and S38/S278 highway projects.
    • The role involves collaborating with Planning and Enforcement teams to develop and apply effective traffic regulation strategies that enhance road safety, manage traffic flow, and support the needs of the community.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience of the relevant legislative frameworks combined with practical experience in their application within a local authority or similar environment.
  • Strong analytical skills, as these are essential for assessing the impact of measures.
  • The ability to work collaboratively with internal teams and external stakeholders.
