The I.L.S.T. Service offers Independent Living and Tenancy related support to adults with a learning disability. The service covers all geographical areas in Calderdale and is typically delivered in each person’s home environment. However, the service also offers support for appointments in relation to medical, housing and financial needs.
The main areas of support that are offered include:
- Health and safety checks
- Dealing with correspondence
- Benefit applications and appeals
- Domestic tasks
- Financial planning
- Debt management
- Housing support
- Medical support
The workload is varied and can be challenging at times.
The support worker role involves supporting people with a learning disability to maintain their tenancy and develop independent living skills. You must perform the role in a person-centred and non-judgemental way. You are required to deliver support as identified on the person’s plan, monitor the well-being of the person, report concerns and record the support offered. Records are held both manually and electronically.
Ideal Candidate
Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to communicate with service users and professionals such as social workers, medical personnel, housing officers and the Department of Work and Pensions. A strong values base and resilience for supporting people to reach their potential and independence. Hard-working and keen to achieve the best outcomes. Experience in social care is desirable but not essential. Must have own vehicle for work and appropriate business insurance cover. Must work as part of a team, but many tasks are carried out as a lone worker in the community.
