Job overview: Are you an experienced Paediatric nurse with a passion to deliver high quality nursing care in a special school environment? An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 5 Paediatric Nurse to join the Special School Nursing Team at Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Trust. This is a term time opportunity for 24.5 hours per week across 5 working days of the week to maintain the current service, supporting children and young people attending Special schools across Huddersfield and Calderdale.

Main duties of the job:

• Provide clinical nursing care within the special school setting.
• Support training and support for Education staff within scope of your own practice and expertise.
• Develop, plan and implement care for children and young people with complex needs and disability who attend special school.
• Take a lead role in the management and support of junior staff on the school site.
• Escalate any concerns to SSNT Team Leader.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities:

• Plan, implement and evaluate care for children and young people in school setting.
• Identifying and providing child specific health care procedures, training for school staff, including competency based assessments where required.
• Use professional knowledge to provide evidence based practice.
• Contribute to single and multiagency safeguarding of disabled children, young people and young adults.
• Demonstrate highly skilled and innovative practice and support new ways of working.
• Demonstrate robust assessment skills and recognise the timely need for appropriate action and onward referral and involvement of other agencies.
• Promote best practice and work within the MDT and education staff.

Person specification:

• NMC Registered Nurse in relevant field of practice (or within 6 months of completing a validated BSc or MSc course, resulting in NMC registration).
• Practice Assessor/Practice Supervisor qualification or willingness to complete.
• Additional post-registration qualification relevant to field of practice.
• Role Specific Training relevant to specialty of the post.
• Teaching Qualification.
• Leadership Qualification.
• Evidence of continuing professional development.

Knowledge, experience & expertise:

• Knowledge and skill to plan, deliver, and evaluate high quality, evidence-based nursing care to a group of patients within the speciality of the post.
• Experience of working with patients, and those that matter to them, from a range of diverse cultures and backgrounds.
• Experience of working as part of a team, with the ability to prioritise own workload.
• Knowledge and skill in infection prevention and control principles and procedures.
• Knowledge and skill in safeguarding principles and procedures.
• IT literacy and ability to use NHS systems.
• Competence in speciality or role specific extended skills required of the post or willingness to undertake necessary training.
• Clinical experience in the specialty of the post.
• Skills in research and audit methodology and application of findings to practice.
• Evidence of introducing change and innovation into nursing practice.
• Experience of working with Children and YP with complex medical and nursing needs.
