Applications are invited from enthusiastic and motivated State-Registered Specialist Biomedical Scientists to join our friendly team in Point of Care as part of the Pathology Department at the CDC-Halifax. Previous laboratory experience, laboratory quality/quality management system and basic IT skills are required. Point of Care Testing (POCT) is laboratory testing performed outside the central laboratory and subject to the same level of professional, public and judicial scrutiny as analyses carried out in the laboratory.

Main duties of the job include:

  • Provide specialised and specific diagnostic instructions over the telephone to users of the service, providing explanation of issues where necessary.
  • Act as primary point of contact for Point of Care when working alone.
  • Liaise with other members of staff within the department on a routine basis to ensure safe and efficient daily operation.
  • Plan your own work and that of the department and prioritise urgent issues.
  • Co-ordinate the work in conjunction with other specialist departments.
  • Prepare specimens for POCT diagnostic testing.
  • Supervise and ensure continuity of a wide range of POCT diagnostic tests.
  • Ensure patient confidentiality.
  • Perform maintenance and basic repairs of the automated analysers/POCT devices.
  • Implement changes to practice within POCT alongside the Service Manager.
  • Provide advice and guidance to other staff members working in that area.
  • Help formulate SOPs with the Service Manager/Clinical Lead.
  • Maintain adequate levels of POCT/Laboratory kits and reagents in the department.
  • Assist with the training of new Associate Practitioners and Biomedical Science students.
  • Work as part of a team within own discipline as well as both within the wider Pathology Laboratories and Trust.

Person Specification:

Qualifications / Training

  • Accredited Degree in Biomedical Science and a completed registration portfolio.
  • State registration with the HCPC.
  • IBMS Specialist postgraduate portfolio in a Biomedical Science Speciality.

Knowledge, Experience & Expertise

  • Significant recent post registration experience within a Pathology department.
  • Supervision and training of biomedical support workers, associate practitioners, trainee BMS, and BMS staff.
  • Experience of UKAS accreditation.
  • Knowledge of all areas of the Pathology department.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to and participation in continued professional development.
  • Willingness to take part in providing a service across multiple sites.
  • Good IT Skills.
