Overview
The Maxillofacial Unit at HRI provides a range of oral and maxillofacial surgical operations that are carried out on an outpatient basis under local anaesthesia, conscious sedation, and general anaesthesia. These include surgical extractions, removal of impacted teeth, and intraoral and facial soft tissue procedures. The Maxillofacial Consultants carry out procedures for the removal and reconstruction of head and neck skin malignancies and nasoendoscope diagnostics.
It is essential for the post holder to have obtained the National Examining Board Qualification for Dental Nurses or a certificate of proficiency awarded by a dental hospital and follow their code of ethics. To be registered with the General Dental Council and carry out all duties within the trust policy framework under the supervision of the consultants.
Responsibilities
- Operational management to ensure efficient day to day running of the department, clinics, and surgery.
- Prepare theatre and surgical trays for operations carried out under local anaesthetic/sedation, following aseptic technique in accordance with Trust guidelines.
- Assisting medical/surgical team and acting as a theatre/scrub nurse, which requires a high level of concentration and physical effort. You will be required to stand in a restricted position for long periods of time, especially during complex cases.
- Correct handling, labelling and dispatch of laboratory/pathology specimens.
- Carry out all duties within the Trust policy framework under the supervision of the Consultant/Medical team. Report any difficulties encountered.
- Training in Basic / Advanced Life Support.
- Follow clinical risk incident procedures and reporting systems.
