This role supports the safe, effective, and well-organised use of medicines within the practice. It combines medicines management with responsibility for the smooth and financially sustainable running of the dispensary. You will work closely with GPs, pharmacists, the dispensary team, and the Practice Manager.

Dispensary Business Lead

You will help ensure the dispensary runs smoothly, efficiently, and sustainably. This role may be split into 2 different roles dependent on the applicant.

Main duties of the job

You will help make sure medicines are used safely, appropriately, and efficiently for patients and the practice. Key tasks include:

  • Acting as a main point of contact for medicines-related queries in a patient-friendly way
  • Supporting patients and clinicians to make informed treatment choices
  • Helping ensure medicines are used safely and effectively
  • Supporting quality improvement
  • Responding to queries from pharmacies, hospitals, and patients
  • Supporting shared care arrangements
  • Collecting simple monthly data to track medicines management and identify improvements
  • Keeping an up-to-date register of patients on higher risk medicines and arranging regular blood tests
  • Managing medicine safety alerts
  • Monitoring the use of certain medicines and working with clinicians to improve safety

Improvement and teamwork

  • Taking part in audits and quality improvement cycles, sharing learning with the wider team
  • Attending medicines meetings and training, and sharing key learning within the practice
  • Helping the practice follow agreed medicine guidelines and formularies

Patient support and systems

  • Improving patient information about medicines
  • Supporting patients with questions or concerns about their medicines
  • Using digital systems to support medicines management and reporting
  • Keeping up to date with medicine changes and contacting patients where needed
