We are looking for a Health, Safety and Environmental Advisor to join our team and provide Health and Safety support across our North of Scotland region. You will act as the focal point and champion for HSE, working closely with the regional management team and project management teams to continuously improve HSE performance.
Key Responsibilities

- Provide guidance and ensure compliance with the CALA Group Standards, HSE management system and statutory/legal requirements.
- Actively contribute to the development of the company’s HSE management system and improvement plans.
- Initiate and maintain positive and proactive measures to raise the level of HSE awareness and performance throughout all departments of the region and with our contractors.
- Assist in the review of the regional H&S training plans in coordination with Cornerstone and the delivery of HSE-related training courses.
- Review contractor RAMS and, where necessary, attend post-tender and pre-start meetings with consultants or contractors.
- Conduct site HSE inspections, coaching and mentoring visits, and client visits in line with the business strategy, supporting the effective closure of any actions arising.
- Visit all projects at least twice a month to carry out scored HSE inspections and coaching and mentoring visits, supporting, coaching and advising site teams to ensure the highest HSE standards are achieved and maintained.
- Review HSE documentation to ensure it is completed to an accurate and acceptable standard in accordance with Group requirements.
- Ensure HSE information, including board reports, performance reports and bulletins, is developed and effectively communicated within the region.
- Ensure all accidents and incidents are reported, investigated and recorded on the CALA SMS in accordance with Group requirements.
- Manage contact and develop strong working relationships with enforcement agencies (e.g. HSE, EA/SEPA, EHO) and attend accompanied site visits where practical.
- Attend Group and regional HSE meetings, including regional HSE and management meetings, forums and contractor engagement sessions, providing effective information on matters relating to HSE.
- Support and advise regions in compiling pre-construction information in accordance with CDM regulations and Group requirements.
- Provide cross-regional HSE support as and when required by the Head of HSE.
Technical Qualifications / Certifications
- IOSH (ideally working towards CMIOSH) and qualified to at least NEBOSH Construction or National General Certificate.
- AISEP and qualified to ISEP Foundation Certificate in Sustainability and Environmental Management or equivalent i.e. NEBOSH Certificate in Environmental Management.
Knowledge & Skills
- Ability to demonstrate advanced knowledge of UK health, safety and environmental legislation, particularly regarding the construction industry.
- Comfortable at developing relationships with employees at all levels.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate clearly and effectively at all levels, from labourers up to senior management and to develop close working relationships with other departments.
- Confident in delivering good quality presentations and training.
- Good negotiation skills, well organised and self-motivated.
- Able to prioritise demand effectively whilst delivering exceptional customer service.
- Able to work well both independently and in a team.
