Do you have experience developing and applying pragmatic, proportionate HSSE (health, safety, security, environment) management systems in organisations delivering or operating hazardous facilities? If so, you could:
- Work with great clients at the forefront of the energy transition.
- Play a meaningful role in delivering net zero - safely and effectively.
- Be part of a company you’re proud of, that genuinely cares about its people.
- Help shape the culture of a growing, employee-owned consultancy - and share in its success.
Cairn Risk is an independent, employee-owned risk management consulting business providing pragmatic and proportionate support to enable the transition to net carbon zero in a safe, effective and attentive way.
All of our work supports the energy transition – helping ensure assets like on- and off-shore wind farms and hydrogen production and storage facilities are conceived, designed and delivered with risks to people, environment, business and reputation reduced As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP) across their full lifecycle. Much of this is grounded in a technical/system safety approach - identifying and assessing major hazards, and defining effective risk reduction measures.
But defining controls is only part of the story. To translate risk reduction into real-world outcomes, organisations need effective management systems - ensuring controls are implemented, embedded and continuously monitored. And while technical safety focuses on major accident hazards, there is an equal responsibility to protect the health, safety and wellbeing of the workforce as well as the environment and asset security.
That’s where this role comes in. We’ve expanded into HSSE management to provide a fully integrated approach - bringing together system safety and workplace safety. This allows us to support the full risk management cycle: from identifying risks, to implementing controls, to ensuring those controls remain effective in practice. This capability is seeing strong demand and rapid growth. As a result, we are looking for consultants at a range of experience levels to help us build this offering - supporting clients with pragmatic advice, workplace reviews and assurance activities, while shaping how this service evolves.
If you have the experience to contribute, and want to be part of a collaborative, growing and purpose-driven business, we’d love to hear from you. Successful candidates will be placed at a level aligned to their experience.
QUALIFICATIONS & ATTRIBUTES
We recognise every candidate brings a unique mix of strengths. We’re looking for individuals with a blend of the following qualifications, skills and experience - across a range of levels, from early career to more experienced consultants.

- Knowledge of ISO 45001 and how it relates to organisations supporting the energy transition.
- Understanding of UK Health & Safety (legislative) requirements and landscape.
- Experience in the development and implementation of proportionate and pragmatic HSSE management systems and safety improvement initiatives.
- Experience in reviewing and auditing HSSE management systems.
- Experience working in the field undertaking health and safety audits (i.e. UK legal compliance, ISO 45001 audits) and be comfortable working directly with clients on site.
- Experience in assessing and improving an organisation’s Safety Culture.
- Experience in conducting incident investigations.
- Experience in interpreting industry data to make practical and pragmatic recommendations for improvements in HSE performance.
- Experience in the integration of system and personal safety in the context of more mature risk management environments working within specific regulations such as The Control of Major Accident Hazards (COMAH) Regulations and/or The Offshore Installations (Offshore Safety Directive) (Safety Case etc.) Regulations 2015.
- Experience in the integration of system and personal safety in the context of less mature risk management environments working within The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015.
- Aptitude and personality to lead multi-disciplinary teams and wider project stakeholders (designers, developers, investors and regulators) through difficult risk management decisions on complex engineering projects.
- Ability to manage multiple projects of varying sizes and complexities whilst developing strong, lasting, relationships with clients of different sizes and maturities.
- Track-record of winning work within a consultancy market.
- Understanding of, and passion for, the science and engineering that will enable the world’s transition to net zero focused on the reduction and removal of harmful greenhouse gas emissions and the repair of damage already done.
- Experience in delivery of training, coaching and mentoring.
- Experience in sharing knowledge and experience across projects for the greater good.
- Outstanding communication skills – written and verbal.
- A full UK drivers license is preferred.
