Design Manager – Construction (Permanent)

Our client, a leading Tier 1 construction contractor, is seeking an experienced Design Manager to join the team delivering a high-profile £20 million new build and refurbishment project within a secure environment.
This is an excellent opportunity to play a key role in the successful delivery of a complex project while working for a well-established contractor with an excellent reputation for delivering major construction schemes.
The Role
As Design Manager, you will be responsible for managing the design process from pre-construction through to project completion, ensuring that all design information is coordinated, compliant and delivered to programme.
Working closely with the client, consultants, architects, subcontractors and the wider project team, you will ensure that design solutions are practical, buildable and aligned with the project objectives.
The role includes attendance at the Brighton head office 1–2 days per week, with the remainder of your time supporting project delivery.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and coordinate the design process throughout all stages of the project.
- Lead design team meetings and drive design programme performance.
- Coordinate architects, consultants and specialist subcontractors to ensure timely delivery of design information.
- Review drawings and technical information to ensure compliance with project specifications, statutory requirements and building regulations.
- Identify and resolve design issues to minimise programme delays and construction risks.
- Work collaboratively with commercial, operational and planning teams to ensure efficient project delivery.
- Maintain strong client relationships and provide regular design progress updates.
- Ensure all design information is fully coordinated and issued in line with the construction programme.
- Promote best practice, innovation and value engineering throughout the design process.
About You
We are looking for an experienced Design Manager with a proven track record of delivering major construction projects for a Tier 1 main contractor.
You will have
- Previous experience as a Design Manager working on large-scale construction projects.
- Experience working for a Tier 1 contractor (essential).
- Strong technical knowledge of construction design, building regulations and design coordination.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Experience managing multidisciplinary design teams and external consultants.
- A collaborative approach with the ability to build strong client relationships.
- Experience delivering projects within secure environments. Previous experience on MOD or MOJ projects would be highly advantageous.
- Relevant construction or design qualification (Degree, HNC/HND or equivalent).
