About the role
Our Emergency Department Clerks perform a valuable frontline role where they will often be the first point of contact for patients and visitors to Cabrini Hospital. The ED Clerk will join our broader Patient Services team and perform a range of vital tasks to help ensure the smooth operation of the Emergency Department. The successful candidate will have a keen interest in healthcare, exceptional interpersonal skills as well as a caring and empathetic approach. Applicants must be able to work across evenings Monday‑Sunday between the hours of 21:15‑07:15 and 21:30‑7:30 (subject to change).
Key responsibilities include:
- Accurately collecting information and creating patient records
- Welcoming, registering and admitting patients
- Discharging patients, including collecting payment of out‑of‑pocket cost
- Submitting online claims to Medicare
- Performing Health Fund Eligibility Checks
- Maintaining patient records and ensuring confidentiality of information
- Collaborating with healthcare professionals to ensure seamless patient care delivery
- Handling switchboard functions from 23:00‑07:00, including answering and transferring phone calls, answering and announcing codes and met calls.
What we’re looking for:
- Previous experience working in a similar role, ideally with medical records or familiarity with medical terminology preferable
- Certificate IV in Hospital Administration or Business Administration (desirable but not mandatory)
- Billing experience and Medicare, MBS knowledge preferable
- A true team player – collaborative, dependable, and equally capable of working independently when required
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with exceptional customer service skills and patient‑focused approach
- A keen eye for detail and accuracy, ensuring every task is completed to a high standard
- Comfortability dealing with patients, clinical staff and external stakeholders such as health funds in a professional, service driven manner
- Proficiency in basic computer applications including Microsoft Suite products
