Position Overview
The role of BIT (Broadcast IT) Field Engineer is responsible for planning and executing the engineering aspects for projects, live productions, and remote operations, as assigned to Global Field Engineering by our News and Sports clients. The role will occasionally be responsible for developing technology plans, organizing resources, providing technical oversight and guidance to staff, and ensuring appropriate technical approaches are implemented on remote operations. This position is suitable for a qualified and experienced Broadcast Engineer, who will apply their technical skills in supporting Sports and News production operations in the field. The post will be based on a nominal 40 hour /5-day week, although actual working hours and shifts may vary considerably, depending on location and production requirements.
Position Responsibilities
- Provide timely and professional support in a fast-paced 24x7x365 Newsgathering or Sports remote production environment.
- Manage personal travel and equipment logistics for remote deployments, both local and international, sometimes on short notice.
- Ability to physically lift and move equipment cases weighing up to 32Kg is necessary.
- Set up/rig in the field and operate IP/Fibre/Satellite TV contribution systems, video/audio routing, technical quality control, remote/local production communications, and related systems.
- Support hardware and software for onsite computing equipment like laptops, printers, and connectivity devices.
- Analyze and solve complex technical problems independently and work effectively within a team environment.
- Participate in event coverage planning, technical system design, installation, and integration projects involving advanced broadcast technology, including server and cloud-based systems, data networking, and other related equipment.
- Perform ongoing maintenance and repair of remote broadcast equipment and vehicles when based in the field.
- Demonstrate broad competency across various technologies and business contexts.
Qualifications / Experience
- Technical degree, preferably electronics or equivalent education/experience/training.
- Typically, 4+ years of experience in television broadcast operations, including rigging, troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of broadcast and IT systems, RF/satellite transmission, studio systems, IP/ASI streaming, file ingest, and quality control.
- UK driving license, ideally with C1 class for driving a 5.5T Van.
- Practical knowledge of health and safety requirements for field operations and hostile environments; training certificates are beneficial.
- Strong operational skills with a wide range of remote broadcast and production equipment, including SNG, satellite and IP contribution systems, encoding/decoding devices, cameras, fiber links, routers, switchers, media decks, NLE systems, storage, signal processing, intercom, and IT networking equipment.
- Knowledge of computer and data networking hardware, diagnostics, and support applications.
- Problem-solving skills and ability to perform under pressure.
- Adaptability to rapidly changing environments.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills (verbal and written).
- Proficiency with MS Office suite; familiarity with Apple devices is a plus.
