We are seeking an experienced Environmental & Quality Specialist to support and drive compliance across our operations. This role will act as a technical expert, ensuring adherence to environmental legislation, permits, and ISO standards (including ISO 14001 & ISO 9001), while promoting a culture of continuous improvement. You will be the key point of contact for the Environment Agency, managing audits, inspections, and compliance matters, alongside maintaining and enhancing our Environmental and Quality Management Systems. The role also involves supporting operational teams, monitoring performance, investigating incidents, and contributing to sustainability and carbon reduction initiatives.
Hours of Work
Full time – 37.5 hours
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain and develop the Company’s Environmental Management System (ISO 14001:2015) and Quality Management System (ISO 9001:2015)
- Support the Energy Management System (ISO 50001:2018), where applicable
- Act as the primary point of contact for the Environment Agency, including site inspections, audits, permit variations, and compliance matters
- Ensure compliance with Environmental Permits, quality standards, and relevant legislation
- Lead and support Environment Agency audits, BSI audits, and customer compliance and quality audits
- Promote and embed a culture of quality, consistency, and continuous improvement across the business
- Support operational teams with environmental and quality best practice, risk management, and incident prevention
- Assist in the preparation and maintenance of site Working Plans and regulatory documentation
- Monitor environmental and quality performance, including KPIs, non-conformances, and corrective actions
- Investigate environmental and quality incidents, identifying root causes and implementing corrective and preventive actions
- Support the monitoring and reporting of the Company’s carbon footprint and sustainability metrics
- Provide environmental and quality input into tenders, development projects, and business improvement initiatives
- Keep up to date with changes in environmental and quality legislation/standards and communicate impacts across the business
- Deliver environmental and quality training and inductions to staff
- Represent the Company at industry groups and forums (e.g. ESA) where required
- Oversee energy-related processes and demonstrate knowledge of ISO 14064 standards
Additional Responsibilities
- Supporting integration of management systems and audit processes
- Conducting internal audits across environmental and quality systems
- Managing document control and ensuring Business Management System (BMS) accuracy and compliance
- Engaging with customers, regulators, and stakeholders on environmental and quality matters
- Supporting environmental awareness and quality improvement initiatives
Candidate’s Experience & Skills
- Essential: Experience working within the waste management, recycling, or environmental sector
- Essential: Proven experience liaising with the Environment Agency, including audits, permitting, or compliance
- Essential: Experience with ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 (ISO 50001 desirable)
- Essential: Strong knowledge of environmental legislation and quality management principles
- Essential: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- A recognised degree/qualification in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Quality Management, or a related field
- Strong organisational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively across departments and as part of the Compliance Team
