The Role
Byrne Group is looking for an Environmental & Sustainability Manager to manage all aspects of the Group's environmental and sustainability impacts. While the role includes core responsibilities, there is an opportunity to innovate and drive improvements across the business. This position will suit an environmental professional who is looking for an environmental and sustainability position with a broad range of responsibilities within the construction sector. The ideal candidate will be an enthusiastic environmental professional, capable of critical thinking, who wants to contribute to positive change. The Environmental and Sustainability Manager is a member of the OHSEQ Team reporting to the OHSEQ Director.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the delivery of the Group-wide environmental and sustainability strategy.
- Providing technical support to construction projects (and our yard team) to ensure statutory, client and company standards are satisfied or exceeded.
- Providing technical support to the tender team by identifying risks and opportunities and assessing associated tender/project impacts.
- Corporate Sustainability & Emission Reporting – ESOS, SECR.
- Delivering company compliance obligations - Consents/Permits etc.
- Lead the implementation and integration of Byrne Group's Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) commitments, including target tracking and alignment across the business.
- Completing internal OHSE audits.
- Developing and delivering environmental training.
- Collecting, analysing, and reporting environmental data.
- Maintain company certification – i.e. FSC, PEFC, waste carriers license.
- Maintain and update the environmental management system in compliance with ISO14001:2015.
- Identify, trial, and implement environmental initiatives and innovation to support the delivery of the environmental strategy.
- Review and update the environmental strategy.
- Set, communicate, and work towards delivering environmental objectives and targets.
- Completing supplier grading and working with suppliers to understand and use innovative materials and equipment.
- Maintaining the legal register, understanding, and communicating the relevance of legislative changes.
- Lead significant environmental incident investigations and responses.
- Preparing site environmental plans.
- Conduct internal OHSE audits and support external audits.
- Represent Byrne Group at client and industry forums and working groups.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience
- Good understanding of environmental and sustainability risks and opportunities within the construction industry.
- Strong working knowledge of relevant environmental legislation.
- Experience of sustainability assessments (BREEAM, LEED, WELL).
- Experience of ESOS and SECR.
- Experience of Section 61 Agreements and Trade Effluent Consents.
- A strong understanding of contaminated land management.
- Experience working with materials, waste and GHG data collection systems and performance reporting tools.
- Membership of a relevant professional body e.g., ISEP.
- Honest, convincing, resilient with strong attention to detail and high standards.
- Strong influencing skills, good negotiator, strong team worker. Not afraid to challenge.
- Ability to professionally communicate across all levels in the organisation.
- Self-starter with a desire to drive business improvements.
- Committed to continuous improvement and innovation.
