Maritime Solicitor / Shipping solicitor – Contentious – 2 PQE+, but broad range of PQE considered – candidates must have marine experience.

Our client is looking for a solicitor with a unique blend of litigation skills to join the award‑winning team. The department boasts one of the leading international shipping teams. Lawyers advise a host of cargo and freight companies, insurance houses and global merchants on a range of complex contentious matters from cargo damage and accidents at sea to serious incidents involving piracy.

Overview

  • Location: London / Guildford
  • Salary: to £105,000
  • Hybrid: Yes – 2 days in office / 3 days WFH
  • Reports to: Partner

Previous Experience: Candidates must possess some experience of contentious shipping / maritime work.

What the work involves: Candidates should be able to demonstrate prior experience of shipping / maritime law. The work involves a range of skills including:

  • Commercial litigation
  • Commercial insurance - property damage
  • Arbitration
  • Negotiation and diplomacy

Nature of the claims: A large portion of work undertaken by the department is litigious relating to all manner of trade disputes such as shipping claims, bills of lading disputes and other breaches of contract as well as property damage including cargo and freight damage as well as collisions at port and at sea. The team also advises on complex marine insurance claims including high profile international piracy cases as well as advising on the legalities surrounding port operations. Such matters may also involve advising on inquest work and regulatory and governance matters, especially where a fatality has occurred or where there is an issue involving two or more jurisdictions.

The clients: Clients range from global freight businesses and marine insurers to international shipping companies. The team has a stellar reputation and is looking to attract the very best talent.
