Our Role

Reporting to the Pressure Boundary & Analysis Engineering Manager, the engineer sets the technical direction for the overall project and acts as the main technical interface point to both internal and external customers. Pressure Boundary & Analysis Engineering is a Mechanical Engineering function that largely focuses on the design and analysis aspects of pressure‑retaining systems and components for CANDU reactors. The group is responsible for the design, analysis, regulatory requirements, development and test of pressure boundary equipment for automated and semi‑automated fueling machines, medical isotope systems, robotic systems, and maintenance tooling for nuclear reactors and related systems.

Your Day to Day

  • Facilitate the preparation of proper plans and schedules (level 3) with individual contributors.
  • Take ownership of the cost/schedule commitments of your team.
  • Create and enforce the use of Task Definition Forms (TDFs) for work assignments.
  • Provide leadership and direction of design activities in conjunction with the technical counselors.
  • Measure and drive job scope control with individuals to improve overall performance.
  • Maintain task surveillance through active engagement with your team and driving accurate work planning through consistent meetings.
  • Maintain team and individual allocation targets, enforce budget adherence and review project budgets and runout estimates as necessary.
  • Actively participate with Functional Manager in resource planning, recruitment, interviewing and onboarding.
  • Prepare and rollout team goals, track performance of team and deliver mid‑year and end of year performance reviews.
  • Attend weekly leadership meetings with Functional Manager and Team Leads, conduct bi‑weekly team meetings, approve teams weekly timecards.
  • Provide execution of, and lead, design/analysis/test/commissioning activities for complex mechanical equipment and systems throughout the entire product life cycle.
  • Preparation, approval or leading of design documentation (including technical documents, drawings and BOMs), technical specifications, development and test plans, and engineering quotations.
  • Application and leading of design for manufacturability/assembly (DFMA) techniques.
  • Provide technical support to CAD, Procurement, Manufacturing, Test, Quality and Commissioning and Service personnel.
  • Participate in, and lead, internal and external meetings, such as design reviews, preparing and presenting technical data.
  • Prepare and/or verify project level deliverables including but not limited to evaluations, reports, and assessments.
  • Utilize classical and modern (finite element analysis) stress calculation techniques to perform/verify stress analysis for components, piping systems, supports, and vessels.
  • Maintain detailed knowledge of the nuclear codes and standards applicable to the Canadian Nuclear environment.
  • Leading by example, assure compliance and adherence to processes (including internal Business Management System), industry codes and standards, quality systems, policies, and contractual requirements.
  • Present and report on status, issues/solutions, improvements, escalate resources needs as required.
  • Provide overall Project Technical Leadership (PTL) duties for projects as required.
  • Contribute to and lead process change through process enhancement, and technology introduction to achieve world‑class product development and product deployment.
  • Build customer relationships and ensure market alignment.
  • This position requires frequent interaction with external customers, subcontractors, and cross functional internal teams.
  • Take an active role and responsibility in driving proposal development and review including scope review and estimate preparation as well as technical and product presentations to the customer.
  • Lead proposals as assigned Proposal Estimate Lead (PEL) roles as required.
  • Proactive and timely identification of project risks, analyze solutions, and take decisive action to resolve issues and communicate these to the leadership and/or executive team as required.
  • Provide technical direction/decisions and oversight of design activities including, technical review and verification of documentation and/or drawings, as applicable.
  • Provide assurance of health and safety associated with the execution of all projects and activities.
  • Short term travel may be required for the purpose of meeting with clients and stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • B.A.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Holds a current PEO license.
  • Typically requires 10 years’ experience in design engineering in Nuclear, Aerospace, Mining, Oil and Gas, or other highly regulated and process based design.
  • Typically requires 3 years’ experience in design and development, with proven success in a technical leadership role.
  • Demonstrated ability in helping lead engineering projects and a key design team member for complex projects over their complete EPC life cycles.
  • Demonstrable experience with project schedules, working within budgets, financial metrics and other project management methodologies.
  • Experience with a broad range of interdisciplinary activities: systems design, requirements development, interface design and testing.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, understandable by a diverse audience.
  • Creative problem‑solving skills, outstanding analytical abilities, demonstrated leadership skills, strong technical experience and the ability to work in a team.
  • Flexibility to work remotely on short‑term customer site assignment.

Desired Characteristics

  • Experience with 3D CAD software (preference for Inventor/Solidworks) and FEA software (ANSYS APDL & Workbench, Caesar II, PEPS, AutoPIPE).
  • Experience in the CANDU Nuclear Industry.
  • Familiarity with CSA Nuclear Codes and Standards.
  • Familiarity with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Codes and Standards.
  • Competency in process system, pressure vessel or pressure boundary component design.
