The Senior Pitch Designer plays a critical role in the initial stages of the project, particularly during the tendering or pitching process. The role focuses on creating and presenting design concepts and proposals that align with the client’s requirements, ensuring that the company wins the project. The term "pitch" in this context refers to presenting a proposal or bid to secure a contract, often in a competitive bidding environment.

Role and Responsibilities of a Senior Pitch Designer in D&B:

  • Creating Design Proposals for Tender Submissions: The Senior Pitch Designer is responsible for developing creative and technical design proposals for tender submissions. This involves interpreting the client's needs, understanding the project scope, and producing design concepts that demonstrate the company’s capabilities. They must create clear, visually appealing, and functional designs that meet the project’s requirements while adhering to any budget or regulatory constraints.
  • Collaboration with the wider pitch Team: The Senior Pitch Designer works closely with the wider pitch Team, including the Project Director, pre-contract lead, technical services, project managers, and commercial teams, to ensure the design aligns with the overall strategy and objectives of the pitch. They collaborate with the appropriate professional teams to integrate all elements of the project, making sure the design is viable from both a technical and financial perspective.
  • Client and Stakeholder Engagement: A key part of the Senior Pitch Designer's role is understanding the client’s brief and vision for the project. They may engage with clients and/or external project managers during early project discussions, helping to shape design solutions based on the client’s needs, aspirations, and budget. They also present design proposals during pitch meetings, clearly communicating the design's benefits and feasibility.
  • Design Presentation: The Senior Pitch Designer is responsible for the quality and presentation of the whole design (e.g., storyboarding and development, generating design principles, concept sketches, detail design development, 3D renders, mood boards etc). They also prepare design-related documentation and information that will be included in the bid package, such as technical details, materials, and design specifications with the support of the wider team.
  • Design Innovation and Differentiation: A Senior Pitch Designer in D&B needs to bring innovative and unique design concepts to the table that can differentiate their company from competitors. This often means finding ways to integrate cost-effective and sustainable solutions that add value to the client’s project while maintaining aesthetic appeal.
  • Internal Coordination and Management: They may lead or manage a team of junior designers or design assistants in the creation of pitch materials. The Senior Pitch Designer will also ensure that all design aspects of the pitch are completed on time and within the scope of the tender process, working to strict deadlines.

Skills and Experience:

  • Design Expertise: A deep understanding of architecture, interior design, and the technical aspects of construction, particularly within the fit-out sector.
  • Experience in D&B Projects: A solid background in working on Design & Build projects, where both design and construction phases are integrated into one seamless process.
  • Pitching and Tendering Skills: Strong experience in designing proposals for pitches and tenders. They must understand how to present designs to win clients and projects.
  • Client-Facing Skills: The ability to communicate clearly and confidently with clients, understanding their vision and translating that into design proposals.
  • Collaboration: Ability to work in a team environment, collaborating with other designers, project managers, and estimators to ensure the proposal is comprehensive and aligned with the business strategy.
