At Dart Ward, our 16-bedded inpatient ward provides vital care to patients undergoing rehabilitation and end-of-life care after acute illnesses. The ward is designed with both patients and staff in mind, featuring a garden, breakout rooms, and patient beds with views of the historic church and castle. This role is based in Totnes at the Community hospital, offering a unique and rewarding work environment in a riverside setting close to the town’s high street, arts, culture, and local eateries.

As a Healthcare Support Worker (HCSW) on Dart Ward, you will be part of a warm, friendly, and dynamic team where everyone is valued and supported. We work together, support one another, and aim to keep the atmosphere positive and fun while providing high-quality care.

Responsibilities:

  • Support a diverse range of patients with compassionate care, rehabilitation, and end-of-life support.
  • Take and interpret vital signs on adults; support with cannulation and venepuncture. You will be supported to undertake these skills and competencies.
  • Assist in therapy sessions, games, exercise classes, and breakfast clubs to support patient recovery.
  • Work as part of a close-knit team with 3 trained staff and 2 HCSWs on day shifts, and 2 trained for 2 HCSW staff on nights.
  • Build lasting relationships with patients and contribute to personalised treatment plans to improve lives and help prevent unnecessary hospital admissions.
  • Understand your role within a multidisciplinary team and contribute to a safe, respectful, and therapeutic ward environment.

You Will Be Responsible For:

  • Undertake training to perform high-quality clinical interventions (e.g., clinical observations, blood glucose monitoring, urinalysis, venepuncture, removal or urinary catheter, insertion/removal of peripheral cannulas, ECG, BMI) following assessment and achievement of clinical competency.
  • Assess a person’s clinical condition within your competence using tools such as NEWS2 parameters, pain assessment tools, and non-verbal signs of deterioration, and know how to escalate concerns appropriately.
  • Adhere to local policies and professional standards to ensure patient safety and dignity at all times.

Due to varying day and night shift patterns not aligning with public transport, a full UK driving licence is required.
