Specialised Healthcare Assistant to join the Ainslie ward at Torbay Hospital, a 26 bedded Trauma and Orthopaedic ward. The role works as part of the MDT ensuring delivery of excellent clinical care within Trauma & Orthopaedics and takes lead role in assessment and care of patients demonstrating challenging behaviours.

Main Duties:

  • Work within the nursing team to provide high quality nursing care across the full spectrum, especially for patients displaying challenging behaviours.
  • Complete "This is Me" documents and appropriate risk assessments to gain vital collateral information.
  • Work in conjunction with Safeguarding and Mental Health Leads, form part of education team, deliver staff educational programmes.
  • Carry out specific clinical tasks delegated by registered practitioners.
  • Support and supervise junior staff; teach as part of role.
  • Work with MDT, both within and external to directorate.
  • Key objectives and responsibilities identified and agreed at interview and yearly appraisal. Additional responsibilities may change annually to increase clinical competencies.

Essential Qualifications and Experience:

  • Proven experience of assisting with intimate personal care activities e.g. washing, toileting.
  • Detailed knowledge of and ability to use patient handling and technical equipment relevant to patient group.
  • Knowledge of relevant policies and dealing with patients who demonstrate challenging behaviour.
  • Excellent documentation skills.
  • Understands need to work within limits of own competence.
  • Relevant NVQ Level 3 or equivalent experience.
  • Evidence of relevant knowledge and skills in HOP/Trauma & Orthopaedics or patients with challenging behaviours.
  • Good written and verbal skills, basic IT skills.
  • Level 2 functional skills in Maths and English or GCSE equivalent.

Desirable:

  • Experience of working as part of a MDT.
  • Aware of MCA and DoLs.
  • Knowledge and skills in a strengths‑based approach.
  • Experience of providing information, training or education to members of staff and the public.

Contract & Salary:

Band 3, £24,937 to £26,598 a year (pro rata). Permanent & full-time. Work pattern: Full-time. Location: Torbay Hospital, Lawes Bridge, Torquay, TQ2 7AA.
