Train to Become a Registered Nurse (Adult) or Registered Nurse (Children and Young People) by joining our blended learning Nursing Degree Programme. This full‑time, 3‑year course delivers all teaching and assessment online, giving you flexibility to study while completing hands‑on practice placements with us. You will be based within the Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust footprint and will experience a variety of clinical placements, gaining an appreciation of many health and care contexts. Upon successful completion of all programme and placement requirements, you will be eligible to apply to join the NMC Register as Registered Nurse (Adult) or Registered Nurse (Children and Young People).
Main Duties of the Job
- Effectively balance academic, placement, and role demands through strong time‑management and organisational skills.
- Deliver safe, person‑centred care under supervision, adhering to health and safety legislation and organisational policies.
- Work within the scope of practice of a student nurse, maintaining accountability and practising within professional boundaries.
- Collaborate with Practice Assessor(s) to set and achieve SMART objectives for personal and professional development.
- Promote equality, value diversity, and raise concerns appropriately to ensure patient safety and professional standards.
How You’ll Learn Over The 3‑Year Course
You will be enrolled as an Open University (OU) student and linked with Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust for placements, with theory sessions taught online by The OU. Students complete three blocks of placement per year; the dates and durations of these placements are discussed at interview. You must commit to both academic study and placements throughout the course.

Student finance is available via the Student Loans Company. Fees are paid on a module‑by‑module basis – you do not have to pay for the whole qualification upfront. At current prices, the total cost would be £28,605*. A wide range of flexible payment and funding options is available. You may also be eligible for an NHS Training Grant of £5,000 per academic year (see the NHS careers website for more information). *Fees and funding information is valid for modules starting before 30 November 2025. Fees typically increase annually. In England, fees are subject to the part‑time fee limit as set out in section C of the University’s Fee Rules.
Eligibility
Applicants must meet the minimum entry criteria: GCSE Maths and English (grade C / level 4) or equivalent Functional Skills in English and Maths (Level 2). Applicants must provide certificates to evidence entry criteria prior to interview. Completed healthcare‑related modules or qualifications at higher education level within the last 10 years (e.g. Nursing Associate, Assistant Practitioner, Diploma of Higher Education, Higher Apprenticeship or a degree programme) may be counted toward the OU Pre‑Registration Nursing Programme to accelerate the journey.
Important Information
Should your application be shortlisted, you will be invited to an interview on 16th, 17th or 19th March 2026, with the aim of starting the programme in October 2026. Note: this opportunity is not funded by the Trust; successful applicants will be unpaid. Applicants must secure funding via the Student Loans Company to cover tuition fees and will be eligible for additional financial support whilst on programme.
